New Feature Feedback: SOS Support Alert - Mocks

I was referring to the 911 signals. Sometimes, if the call gets dropped-bad signal, quick disconnect, etc-the only location we get is the closest cell tower that was pinged. Generally, this isnt very helpful, as there can be several miles between towers. As to texting, I can confirm it DOES...

New Feature Feedback: SOS Support Alert - Mocks

So, my thoughts on this, is keep it simple, similar to a 9 line medevac, which we used to use. That way, everything is there, you just need to plug and play. Something like: 1. Location-pretty self explanatory. And, the app should pin your location (or, if possible, last known location, if there...

New Feature Feedback: SOS Support Alert - Mocks

as a 911 dispatcher, this only kinda works. Sadly, if you are out of cell phone service, it may only ping at the closest tower. Have seen that happen a few times. I am not discouraging anyone from calling, for sure, but, set the expectations. Of course, we now have text to 911 (not sure if its...

    where to start with HAM

So, my $0.02, for what they are worth: an HT works great short distance. But, not in a vehicle. Essentially, you are in a Faraday cage, and your Rx/Tx will suffer accordingly. That being said, a HT is a definite must, and the baofeng is the cheap and easy route. I started with the UV5r as many...

Who is a Vet, Active or First Responder?

14 years US Army/Natl Guard as an infantryman. 88-91 active duty, 91-96 national guard. Break in service, 99-05 national guard again. Currently employed as a 911 dispatcher, so, I get to tick both boxes :)

Are newer vehicles preventing you from choosing them for overlanding due to complexity?

Oddly, this is a debate brought up in the motorcycle world as well. Some of us travel on bikes, and the debate between reliable modern tech, and old school ease of shadetree mechanics, comes up often. I think a big part of this is driving something that is easily fixed in the field, and/or has...

    Any New England meetups?

Just curious, as I am slowly getting into this, but have car camped, and camped in general, damn near all my life. But, looking for monthly, or even quarterly, meetups, whether its a day, a weekend, an event, or just a sit around a campfire and lie to each other type of thing.

    CarPlay support?

Definitely interested in this, as my truck is wireless for AA, and I dont usually have my phone near me when driving, so using the app enroute doesnt really work for me. Would MUCH rather have it on my screen in front of me, than on my phone!

    Unusual Gear

Extrication gloves. They are heavy duty, used by firefighters for, well, extrication. But, they keep your hands well protected when moving prickly or sharp objects as well :)

Where did your weekend take you?

We went to a local overland rally, in CT. The first annual New England overland rally at Thompson speedway. A few pics:

    Handheld or Permanent HAM?

HTs (handhelds) are limited by their power, which is 7 watts I believe (I think they just changed it to 7, anyway). At best, in ideal conditions, you will MAYBE get a couple miles out of it. A mobile radio, you can get 50 watts, which gives you a MUCH better range to hit repeaters-15-20 miles...

    Where To Display Emblem

    New England Overland Rally

Its this weekend, the 1st & 2nd of October. I will be there with the GF, coming from MA. I have their deluxe package, or whatever they are calling it, and am SUPPOSED to get an email that allows us to stay Friday night (we are camping there this weekend). Waiting on that now. There are over 2...

Post pictures of your camp kitchen

Here is my Yoke Outdoors chuck box, in use. The stove is a Coleman 425E I picked up off ebay, cheap. It was labeled as "not working, needs parts". Being pretty familiar with these, from my youth, and other stoves of the era, I figured, for the price he was selling, the part I may need, if any...

    New England Overland Rally

They have announced some more vendors over the past couple weeks. Some trailer vendors, among others. Again, it will only get bigger if its well attended. And, something in New England would be nice to attend, yearly :)

    Clothing what do you pack?

Honestly, I think you are overpacking, but, hear me out. If you simply plan on heading out in the Jeep, and its just you, there REALLY isnt a need to change EVERY DAY. Yes, you may smell a little bad when you get home-but the shower is worth it. Here is what I suggest: Underwear-4 days worth...

    Camp coffee!

I like my instant coffee. I honestly think its a holdover from the Army lol. I like the Nescafe instant packets, second is Folgers. I will never, ever turn down a cup of coffee though! I prefer MAKING instant, but have no issues partaking of other's brews if offered :)

    Any dispersed/free camping SE MA?

I am going to the NE Overland Rally at the beginning of OCtober, and will be looking to do some free camping down in the SE MA (Freetown area) or possibly down near the Thompson Motor Speedway in CT? My gf and I have a couple days off before the event, and are looking to camp out in the area...

    New Communications!

Realistically, in heavy woods, with GMRS, 2 miles is good. Its only a 15 watt radio. My ham radio at home puts out 100 watts and gets MAYBE 25 miles on a good day (on UHF). The higher the antenna, the better the reception-because of the way the waves propagate. Which is why people who mount them...

    New Communications!

I have the same radio. I mounted mine in my taco, on the drivers side of the center console. I have my ham radio mounted on the other side. As a rule, the higher the antenna, the better. Both my antennas are mag mounted, on the roof. GMRS I have never had an issue reaching others on the trail...
