What do you think about renting the base rig you think you’d like best, then seeing how you like it over the 4 weeks and 5,000 miles?
As for serious ‘off-roading’ in Moab, for example, rent a built up Jeep in town.
Your rental LX (or whatever) will get you everywhere else.
Try finding one...
I have. It can be spectacular.
When I drove the Pony Express trail from Salt Lake to Lake Tahoe I’d initially planned to go with friends, with my son as my co-driver. One by one, they all dropped out, so I charged up my InReach and went solo.
The trail is not technical, and the experience...
First things I did were slightly bigger AT tires and ‘step sliders’ by Body Armor. Plenty of people will point out that these aren’t real sliders, and they’re right; but they are enough for what I do.
The rest came as my hobby evolved and needs manifest themselves.
I wanted something with a good selection of modifications available, something that was capable - out of the box, and something that could grow with me as my activities changed over the years.
I’ve had 2” BORA spacers on my 2016 Tacoma since 2017.
People have reasons for loving and for hating spacers in principle. That’s fine. I’ll tell you what mine do for me.
I have kept my stock wheels, which I like. When I put 285/75r16s on, they rubbed on my upper control arm and limited my...
Like vehicle modifications, I’d recommend starting small and cheap. If a roof rack is too small, what about a hitch-mounted carrier PLUS the rack?
Find out what works. If you grow into a trailer, great. If you find tent camping works best for the family, great!
Resist the pressure to be...
I don’t have traction boards, but I do have tire chains that I carry. I’ve used them once to unstuck myself, and my brother borrowed them once to unstuck his son.
As far as price goes, there is the thought that if your life could depend on it, a couple hundred dollars is cheap. That’s a tough...
I’m referring to both.
The damage to trails caused by fast driving and tire spinning causes other drivers to ‘widen the road’ as they attempt to avoid ruts and holes. Over time, roads turn into trenches.
Leaving the trail is an inexcusable sin. Along with shallow cat holes, abandoned trash...
Not to point fingers, but there are a crap-ton of douchebags and idiots in ‘side-by-sides’ who actually DO tear up the wilderness.
That said, closing it all to everyone who doesn’t have dreadlocks or wear Chacos isn’t the answer, either.
That's a nice setup.
As far as bringing the kids, if you can tolerate a little dirt and some sleepless nights training them to camp, I think you're fine to start out as soon as you feel like it. Camping before they're crawling is actually very nice and easy.
