Why do people say “out west?”

Surely from an "American HIstory" perspective, given that (at least when we think of the human population) the vast majority of this history was from 13,000 BCE to 1000 CE (more or less). During this period settlement was from Alaska east and south, with people arriving in the southernmost parts...

Why do people say “out west?”

Speaking of the "Pacific North West" this is presumably Alaska?

    First Aid Kit Location

We've used our kit on a few occasions, nearly all to help others, for example, in one campsite a child experienced a burn from a camp stove; the parents had no kit, and we were able to treat the burn with ours. So far, nothing really serious. We have a kit which was put together...

    First Aid Kit Location

Don;t forget an epipen, if you're going to Australia.

    First Aid Kit Location

Wherever you put it, it needs to be visible immediately, preferably from outside. There's not much point in having a first aid kit if you're unconscious and the good samaritans who could save you don't know where it is (or even that there is one).

    On/Off road tires recommendations

PS: if you plan much time in dunes, although 18 in will be better than 20 in, you'd be better with 17 in rims.

    On/Off road tires recommendations

I think you should go for ATs to give a balance between capability and comfort/noise. As others note, it depends on what you plan to do, however only once in decades have I been in a situation where I wondered whether MTs would have been better (and where if I had bothered to take the sand...

Satelite Phone - Which One is Best?

Sounds as if you're not going far this trip, however if you travel further afield then you could consider Thuraya and Iridium. I've had an Iridium for many years - works everywhere. Thuraya doesn't cover the whole planet.

Securing your kitchen dishes during travel

Why so many? We have one pan which serves as a frying pan, saucepan, etc., all in one. Two plates, two mugs, KFS each.

Why do people say “out west?”

Yes Colorado is roughly central, actually in the eastern half of the USA. The mid-point between the easternmost point and the westernmost point in the USA is the border between Idaho and Oregon, more or less. The "mid west", in the sense of the middle part of the western half, would be the...

Why do people say “out west?”

I offer humble apologies! Wrong Windsor... I see that you're at GFW (not the other Windsor) so at 48m. Of course you'd go "up" to Labrador, apart from the bit across the water...

Securing your kitchen dishes during travel

We keep our two plates in the canvas bag which holds our only pan - no noise.

    Inflatable Jack???

Ronny Dahl has a good video on jacks - google will find it. We had one for one "big trip" never had to use it so not much help I'm afraid. However it took up quite a lot of space and was quite heavy (didn't seem that heavy because the density is lower than that of a bottle jack. We sold it...

Why do people say “out west?”

Windsor is at 190 m elevation. The average elevation in Labrador is, as far as I can find, 182 m. So, Labrador, on average, is lower than Windsor, and you'd go "down" to Labrador. However you don't really go to an average, you go to a point, so if you're going to Labrador City you'd go up, and...

    Most compact air compressor?

Good thought! Never occurred to me.

Ontario Canada, Back roads or trails? what's your preference?

Thanks for the clarification. Now I need more education - there is apparently a scale for tracks/trails. Where can I find out what the numbers mean?

Is camping a viable alterantive to hotels when traveling?

Hmm - I think it depends on your camping set up. We take about 3 minutes to set up to camp if we're just stopping for the night; if we set up the camp chairs and table that's another 5 minutes; if we put out one or both awnings that adds about 5 minutes. So, a maximum of 13 minutes or so to set...

    Most compact air compressor?

This is the key question. We have two - a small one which we've had for ten years and which takes 20+ minutes to inflate a tyre. and a newer one ( AC-PRO Air 150) which delivers 375 L/min at 150 psig which we bought to air up more quickly. Needless to say we've used the small one a few times and...

Is camping a viable alterantive to hotels when traveling?

More or less, yes, however on our first "big trip" (11 months around South America) we didn't fit any of these. We camped for a week on a walk up Monte Roraima, otherwise we stayed in posadas/small hotels in rural areas, and in big cities we stayed in "good" hotels to have a break, have a good...
