In over my head, so I thought I'd reach out for help

Interesting question. My reaction is - what are you planning to do? If I were in this situation I'd keep the vehicle minimalist, very much as it is right now, but replace the steel roof rack with titanium, build in some electrohydraulic controls to adjust the bed, handle the kit on the roof, and...

    Beach Driving and Corrosion

Gernerally - a good point. A bit tough though to rent in Uyuni, drive the rental to San Pedro, and ask someone to drive your own vehicle the long way (the VERY long way) around to meet you in SP.

    Beach Driving and Corrosion

We avoid driving on beaches - they're for tranquillity, walking, surfing, swimming, and relaxing, in our view, although we respect other viewpoints completely. We have driven on beaches occasionally, where it's legal, and only to get somewhere (Jericoacoará, for example). We have then washed...

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

re "I don't recall ever winching more than 4 feet. 200' sounds more like operator error, than overlanding." I recall that many years ago I found 3 vehicles stuck in a river bed. The closest, which I pulled out first, was about 15 m away from the bank; the second was about 20 m, and the third...

    Ladder recommendation

We sleep in the vehicle - it's set up with a bed - took out the rear two rows of seats, built a frame, storage, fridge, drawers, etc. It's a great option.

    Combining Hobbies! Overlanding and Eating!

We have a wine rack - or more correctly three wine bottle holders built in to the storage below the bed - padded canvas so no clinking. Minimalism doesn’t mean we can’t have a glass of wine at camp.

    Funky Tire Pressure Guage

Hmm - gauges are either made to a standard (it depends on the country what it is - here it's ICONTEC NTC 2263, which specifies a maximum error of 5%) or to whatever the gauge manufacturer thinks will be sufficiently accurate for customers to accept. Now, a lot of gauges are sold cheaply which...

Yes, I know there have been complaints. Apparently some of these are badly made and create point stress which can cause damage. Ours was used more or less daily (often several times) over a 9 month trip with no damage at all (as you can see - the photo was taken after the trip).

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

I guess that's why we have the Core Principles. Inclusion is great, diversity is great, and I think we can all learn from each other, no matter how different our travel styles are. I value insights from those with the banged up steel plates, as well as those who travel in RVs which would be...

One of the reasons we don't have a RTT - I'm not as limber as I used to be!

Mopane worm stew - delicious! You can also eat them dried (like biltong (jerky)), boiled, or fresh off the mopane trees.

Simple, light, doesn't add much mass, takes up little space - works for us.

    Combining Hobbies! Overlanding and Eating!

We've improved our cooking capability over our trips - open fires (where allowed), and on minimalist kit. On eating - where do I start? Empanadas in Mexico, Salteñas in Bolivia, Moapne worms in Botswana, chorizo in Buenos Aires, Mezze in Algiers.....

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

Hmm - the only times I've had to winch someone out of trouble I've had to pull them at least 10m (and once about 30m). I'd hate to have to do that with a High Lift jack...

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

Insurance; like all recovery gear it's a case of having it available but driving to avoid having to use anything. The majority of occasions we''ve ever had to use anything has been to help others.

Satelite Phone - Which One is Best?

Saving the battery basically. Although it can take a while to find satellites, it's never taken more than a few minutes in my experience.

Satelite Phone - Which One is Best?

We’ve had an Iridium satphone for 20 years. Not used often, and not inexpensive, however when we’ve had to use it it’s worked. Iridium has the best coverage and has proved reliable in our experience.
