New Tacoma Trailhunter - What does this mean for 4Runner?

It's safe to assume the next-gen 4Runner will get all the same models and partnerships as the 'taco. That seems to be the trend with the previous gen 'taco (as in 3rd Gen, considering this new one as "current" now but I suppose that's a bit premature) & current 4Runner. -TJ

    Help, I have Jeep envy

My truck's break-over isn't great, but it sits pretty tall so it's not as bad as you might expect. That said, it's not a rock crawler. I love the WB on the WJ (~106" stock, mine is around 108"), I think it's right around "perfect" as a compromise between nimbleness, interior space, ride...

    Help, I have Jeep envy

Yeah, I was just making the point that I've done and seen more in my Silverado that "is a terrible Overland platform" than moooooost fully kitted out Tacomas with 92 rotopax I see driving around the Bay Area. If you know what you're doing and properly equip your vehicle a long wheelbase isn't a...

    Help, I have Jeep envy

If a Colorado has an unacceptably long WB for Overlanding, I guess I'm just effe'd and shouldn't even try...

Recommendations for cheap/simple point 'n shoot cameras?

I love the camera itself... I still haven't used it enough. My trips tend to be pretty mobile, and I'm usually the slower moving rig in the group (the FWC is very light, and my truck handles it well... but I'm still not going to bomb a trail like my buddies with long-travel 4Runners setup for...

    New Rig Question

I'm biased, and tend to agree. And there's a "hack" to make sleeping in them pretty reasonable: You just get the right size action packer and pop the bottom of the passenger seat out and you're good to go. That said, it's prob a bit small for longer-term living, but I guess the stock roof...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Mine got a bath, for the first time since sometime last fall? Lol. It still had mud on it from my trip to Moab in Oct. -TJ

    New Rig Question

LR4s actually seem to be reasonably reliable. If it's what your heart and mind are set on, then don't just rule it out because of the reputation. Get over on the Land Rover forums and solicit real world feedback from owners. Figure out what years and mileage fit in your $30k budget and see...

    Salt and Pepper Grinder

I have some rechargeable (USB) ones I got cheap on Amazon. It sounds like the ultimate in lazy, but I use a LOT of pepper when I'm cooking, especially if I'm doing a bunch of steaks for a big group so hand-grinding honestly gets old. Boo-hoo, I know. ;) It's all plastic. The only thing I...

How do the first gen Xterras/Frontiers compare to 1G Tacomas/3G 4runners?

Yeah, I probably worded it poorly. Was just saying it's similar to what you hear from Jeep people about the 4.0L I6: "it's a torque monster, it makes more torque down-low because its peak is lower..." but it's not that it makes more torque down low, it just never ends up making any HP. Lol...

How do the first gen Xterras/Frontiers compare to 1G Tacomas/3G 4runners?

I'm seriously not trying to be combative, but the curves you provided (thanks for those) seem like the answer is "yes" and prove my point. Let's just look at 1500 RPM as a good example, since the torque converter in these things flash to at least that (and if you're in a manual you're prob not...

    On the road again..

I moved to Vegas about 2 years ago... but truth be told don't get to spend a ton of time there yet because of work. I'm looking forward to meeting more Vegas-based folks and exploring more myself. I'm down Southwest. FWIW as a first place to explore out of Vegas look into the Gold Butte...

How do the first gen Xterras/Frontiers compare to 1G Tacomas/3G 4runners?

I often hear a similar thing when people compare 4.0L I6s and 4.7L V8s in WJs. In the case of WJs I have all the dyno graphs and have done the "write-up" a zillion times, and while it's true the V8 peaks a bit higher, at the same RPM as the I6s torque peak the V8 is making more torque... I'm...

How do the first gen Xterras/Frontiers compare to 1G Tacomas/3G 4runners?

It seems like a *nice* 2nd Gen Xterra is more inline price-wise with a *decent* 3rd Gen 4Runner, at least around here. I think the 2G X is still a good, relatively compact size. For fun with numbers, a 2nd Gen X is ~179" long, ~73" wide, and ~75" tall (all of which are only 1-3" more than a...

    Overpacking

Some great points. I keep several gloves in my truck. From latex gloves for clean-up and some cooking situations, to warm ones for cold weather, to a few types of work gloves for chainsaw work or working on the truck (or heck, even just filling up on the big rig side of a truck stop) but NONE...
