this gun legislation does nothing to lower gun crime rates. Criminals do not buy registered guns nor do they register said firearm. The only thing this does is make some people sleep better at night. Ignorance is bliss.
I’m just gonna toss this question out there. Why?, because I hear the “ criminal “ argument all the time. It is the go to bumper sticker saying. When was the last time a criminal committed a mass shooting? The answer is extraordinarily rarely, a negligible percentage that one could say with confidence, - none. They have all been law abiding citizens that have either legally purchased, or borrowed a legally purchased weapon from parents or friends. It took nearly 20 years to get “tommy” guns off the streets after they were made illegal. First steps need to be taken, one step at a time.
Every mass shooting was done by a criminal. They are against the law. Handicapping a victim is not the solution.

I grew up in Alaska always carrying a .44mag revolver when camping. These days I generally carry a 9mm and bear spray. In bear country I’ll add that .44mag to my kit or even a rifle but I’m not too concerned down here in the states. As a side note I only ever camp in remote dispersed camping locations and rarely at an official campground.
recommended caliber for Alaska trips? Hand guns not an option for us canucks
In Alaska, I carried:
Shotgun, 12 gauge, Brenneke Black Magic Magnum,
Rifle, 45-70, 30-06 if AR, M855 green tip.
Pistol, Toklat .454 Casull, 10mm (Xtreme Penetrator), .45LC, .45ACP (xtreme Penetrator)

The weapon, the ammo together are a defense platform. Never took an AR camping in Alaska. I am really partial to shotguns.

State laws also determine what you carry. Two of my 3 are illegal in California.

I know, everytime I say or write it. But I know people who successfully protected themselves and their family with it. Keep it dry.

I also carry, all the time not just camping. I like the line-up you keep. Molon labe
If things don’t get dicey, nobody should even notice me. I’m just an old man walking by.
This fall headed to Big Bend NP. Disperse camping. Fellow Texans have advised me to make sure I’m protected. I will heed that advice.

I am in your shoes, old man not even noteworthy, that is a main reason I conceal carry, I like to be unnoticed.

But then we’re in the category of prey. Criminals can tell prey by the way the walk!

I understand your point, but being unnoticed is not synonymous with being an easy mark. Awareness of the surroundings is the most important part of staying safe, in my opinion. Blessings for you Angel.

I do. What I bring depends on where I'm going and who's with me. An 18" barrel 12-gauge pump shotgun with slugs and buckshot is never a bad idea to sleep with. Also having a 9mm or 45 ACP handgun close by is comforting. And if my wife is with me, figure something is on my person (and possibly on hers too).

I think couple years ago or so, there was an older couple disperse camping on their own. Their bodies were found, their expensive RV located in Mexico. Beautiful young couple they met on the road were driving.

I didn't say Canadians dont need firearms in the woods. AR has no place anywhere anways.
I totally disagree with your opinion on guns (AR15) but we can agree to disagree.
Looking back on this conversation, the question was more about “who does carry” and not so much why. Now that it’s cooled down, I’m starting to get ready. Thanksgiving at Magnolia Beach.

Do I carry-yup. Will I carry-you betcha. I have an emergency tow kit, extra propane, a med kit, a trauma kit, and yes, a self defense kit starting with a rape whistle. Just in case. Joking, it’s an air horn. If I don’t need it, like all the other kits, it will be invisible to the public. If I need it, I won’t be caught short. It’s that simple.

If you choose not to carry, IMO you are and should be perfectly free to not do so. At home, when seconds count, the po-po are minutes away. Can you imagine if those minutes were hours? I’ve done that and I pull a trailer.

VI Overlander - If I told my wife I was taking a gun on our next camping trip she'd refuse to go. I have question … where do you plan to buy your gun!? :grinning:
If I told my wife that I was leaving the guns at home she would refuse to go and argue with me that I should not be going either. Better to have and not need, then to need and not have.
Exactly. We have encountered things while overlanding in the SE on occasion. Recently, we rolled into a familiar hidden gem of a site later then we wanted. We show up and there's a garbage pop up out there and it looks like a portable meth lab parked in the middle of this site that can hold at least 6 vehicles/tents. This person wasn't there at the time but the ole saying "what if?" I'm prior Army Ranger and we are always prepared. No one will harm my family. We marked the coordinates and moved on to another location. LE was made aware of the siting and given coordinates to check just to make sure.

I too disagree. You can’t virtue signal when you’re not being virtuous because you don’t have a choice. If one were to be attacked by multiple bad guys (common in Houston) having an AR in hand will change the dynamic of the confrontation. More likely in the victims favor.

Not common in Canada ... yet anyway.
