My almost 3 year old LOVES camping. We took her on her first trip when she was 7 months old, and we've gone as much as possible since then (which means we've gone nowhere near as often as I really want!)
Now, any time we're driving somewhere and she sees so much as a tree and some bushes next to the road/highway, she says "that would be a perfect place to go camping!" She's not very discerning yet, but the instinct is good.
Camping with a kid is way different than it was pre-child, and it would be fair to say that it's no longer the relaxing, contemplative affair it once was (at least while she's still so young). Still, watching her experience nature with such wide-eyed wonder and enthusiasm is worth all the hassle. Beer helps too...
