Not sure about the 3rd Gens, but the first mod I did on my 2nd Gen was to put in the rear differential breather mod.

And then I installed my ham radio in it.

Then it was about 6 1/2 years later, I'm finally getting a small lift installed this week now that my stock suspension is wearing out.

I added the Billstein shocks all around, an AAL in the rear from Headstrong, and a heavier coil in the front. The ride seems softer, and added about a 2" lift. I couldn't bring myself to change out the new tires yet. Once these wear out, I'll get some better ones.

I’m getting ready to do that exact upgrade, except I had to get the Icon 3 leaf AAL and got the Headstrong 2” coils for the front.

Congrats on the truck! @JandAOffRoad . Just recently bought a 2017 DCSB TRD OR myself. Let the mods begin! Tons of good advice on this thread so far. Just get out and use it. Ideas and needs will come in the sudden "oh $&*#" moments.

Like @JCBigler said on the rear diff breather mod, definitely do this. Our 3rd gens have the same weird rear breather that's on top of the differential and exposed easily for water to get in. Easy fix: hose clamps, 3/8" fuel line ~6ft, Toyota part# 90404-51319. Thread that baby in and run the hose up to the rear frame under the box and route up into your rear left light housing. Nice spot in there to ziptie upright. (have to take the light out but thats easy my removing two 10mm bolts in the bed). No need on the fronts; those are already routed up nice in the engine bay.

Oh also @JandAOffRoad if you have the automatic and have felt the notorious bad shifting behaviors that these 3rd gens have, a recent TSB was released in mid July to address this. I just took my truck into the dealer to have this done and the truck feels like different rig. No more shifting hesitation, hunting for gears, actually goes when stepping on it, etc.

For any other folks with 3rd gens here is the TSB if interested (attached)

THANK YOU for this information. Ya this has been bugging the SHIT out of me. It feels like it wants to stay in 4th gear, so I pop into S mode and shift up to 5 and/or 6. But then i forget I'm in S mode when I slow down on the freeway or get off the freeway and UGGGHHHH.

The bad shifting behavior has been a soar spot with me and this truck. Love it other than that. lol

No worries, glad to help. I was tired of using the ECT button ALL THE DAMN TIME. Practically made the truck immobile in some situations, like safely merging onto interstate traffic.... Got back from Colorado a few weeks ago and shifting was horrible in the mountains. Big difference now.

Light bars! Somebody once told me if you get yourself stuck in a sticky situation just turn the light bars on and you can get out of anything. :tearsofjoy:

How's the TSB working out for you? Thinking about scheduling my truck for an appointment this week.

Hey Scorpio go schedule it! Best thing I did for the truck yet. Drives like a completely different truck. Power, no hesitation, no hunting for gears on the hills....

What is your fog light set up? I'm thinking about amber fogs as well. Like em? LED? Curious about the ditch pods as well.
Cheers

Took it in yesterday and they updated the software and took care of the problem..What a difference in performance so far.

Can’t wait to drive her to Arizona today and also get some Off Road in while there!

Thanks for the post and the TSB report.

Heh, no I went cheap with the fogs. Those are Lamin-X films (https://www.lamin-x.com/). I've got plenty of light already from the ditch lights and the bumper bar so I didn't need more output from the fogs, I just wanted some contrast and the film does the job.

This is what they look like running at night, headlights off, just the fogs and ditches.

The ditch lights and bumper bar are from CaliRaisedLED. Bumper bar is the 32" OSRAM LED combo bar (spot and flood), ditch pods are the side-projectors. Pretty happy with them.

In heavy fog last night with just headlights and fogs.

Low beam, fogs, and ditch lights.

Low beam, fogs, ditches, and bumper bar. Not helpful in this situation but it's interesting to see the throw pattern from the spots.

Congrats on your first mod - real off road tires... I really hate that Toyota does not equip their vehicles with proper tires - they love to put a badge on their vehicles that say Off Road but they look so blah with out real tires to back up the sticker.
Now you can explore more of the vehicle's potential. A free mod - take a grinder to the side steps and just cut off the step. Use what you have until it is time to upgrade. Heck, you might never even hit, scratch, or dent those things so why waste money on something that isn't damaged. A smart driver in a stock vehicle can go farther than a dumb driver in a modded out vehicle.
That’s one idea, and a worthy one. Another way to go about it is to take them off now while they are still worth selling and use proceeds to get actual sliders. There’s still a chance for body damage if you hit those hard and they will have no resale value.
