Going to be in the Lynchburg, VA area for a few days. Would love to learn about some great day trip routes to explore. Looking for some off pavement as well. Have driven much of the Blue Ridge Parkway in this area, but not spent time on the less traveled dirt. The guys at Mountain State Overland used to publish some routes, that I recall were in WV and perhaps VA. No more. Thanks for sharing.

Outside of Lynchburg is shoe creek. When not closed is a fun route over the mountains into George Washington National forest. Great spots all through there with an awesome family campground sherando lake. Check out big levels a mile from sherando lake there is an off-road route up to the blue ridge parkway known as 162/bald mnt jeep road/ big levels trail. This might help a little. The big levels/ coal rd runs pretty far and borders saint Mary's wilderness area. Lots of hiking and camping possibilitys.

If you're willing to drive up the Harrisonburg, VA, there's an OHV trail that goes up to Flagpole Knob. The more "challenging" route starts at 10181-10193 Union Springs Rd, Dayton, VA 22821. I've only done it once in my stock 5th Gen 4Runner.
