Hello Raul, Dominic here from our SoCal meet-up.

For basic editing, ease of use, and a short learning curve I would recommend iMovie. However, I know you are using PC...what type of phone are using? Do you have a tablet?
I have an android phone. As far as my pc itd a Dell xps 13.

We use Adobe Premiere Pro CC after struggling with the Sony platform. Adobe is much more intuitive for my methods.
We shoot on a Canon Xa30, Nikon D5300, Galaxy S6, CGO3 (4K drone), and GoPro Silver 4.
Here's the first video we edited on Adobe Premier Pro:

Still learning but we can crank them out a LOT faster now.

Can you import AVCHD files directly from the camera into Premiere? Great videos by the way!

I have used movie maker before UT for some reason it's not available for Windows 10.

If you know photoshop, premiere is a good transition. Also with Adobe Creative cloud you'd be able to get tutorial access along with help desk. Lynda.com and Youtube are great too!

I usually dump the SD card to a local hard drive then backup to an external. All my currently working files get moved to my SSD hard drive so I don't have to build proxy files which is time consuming. My setup allows me to preview video in full resolution that way. I've never directly imported from a camera to the program but I think it can be done.

Thanks for the info. I was having a strange issue where my computer was not seeing my camera as a hard drive which is why I was asking. It's an older Sony and Sony's software no longer supports it. I tried again this weekend and I was able to see it as hard drive and pull my files off. I mostly use the GoPro but the super wide angle isn't always great for the subject matter.

I downloaded Adobe Premier Elements and it was able to see the .mts files but audio was not playing back. After some google-ing it is apparently a known intermittent issue with Premier, converting to another format gets around it.

I have been using Hitfilm Express and I have tried DaVince Resolve. Both are free versions of very powerful movie industry editing programs. The free versions are still very powerful and offer the full gambit of editing tools. Hitfilm Express is the one that I have gotten to know the best as it runs decently well on my mac mini, although I could really use a hardware upgrade for video editing purposes. Hitfilm Express is limited to 1080P editing. The pro version will let you do 4k and probably add way more things that is far beyond what I need. DaVince Resolve allows you to do 4k in the free version but as a whole I found that program to be too much for my poor computer. Besides editing in 4k is a pain, the files are ginormous. They both have good tutorials out there. I like that I get all that I am looking for, which is more flexibility than what iMovie gives you, with out the commitment of shelling out $20+/month that adobe requires.

I've just started playing with Resolve myself for editorial purposes at home. It's sort of ironic as I work in the movie industry producing movie trailers and have spent years over the shoulder of professional editors and colorists observing. We use Resolve in our theaters to color time the trailers, but don't use it for editorial purposes. Resolve definitely likes some robust hardware but I have found it pretty responsive on my Dell laptop running an i7 processor. For editorial purposes at work we use Autodesk's Flame Premium but this is major $$$ so not an option for the home.
Despite the abundance of 4K tv's coming to market, we mostly work in 2K due to the added time and expense of working at 4K, not to mention file storage etc.

I also am not really interested in the Adobe $20 cloud plan, but Premiere Elements can be purchased for $99, so I also looking at it as a solution. I'm going to continue messing with Resolve since it's free and see how it goes. Have to admit, after sitting in edit bays all day, all week, it's hard to go home and work on my own material!

I used Sony Vegas, it is solid and intuitive, but at a certain point it had a hard time with larger edits, and some file formats. I still believe Sony Vegas is a great starting platform. I am now on Premiere Pro, I find it a bit slower but much more stable, and robust.

If you have the time dual boot your laptop or setup a separate PC and dump a version of a desktop Linux on it and then try one of theses 10 video editors for Linux.
