Hi
Am coming up the Turkish coast to Cappadocia and then on through to the north east of Turkey to cross the border into Georgia. Am on an NZ passport.
Is there anything I need to be aware of, going through eastern turkey?
Is the border crossing into Georgia, easy enough? Do you recommend a particular boder crossing?

With thanks

Hi Pete,

I am just back from a 3months trip through that region.

I have also been to the southeast and east of Turkey. Mardin, Lake Van, Ararat, etc. Be aware that there are travel warnings from the foreign offices for parts of the region. I felt comfortable and safe everywhere. But everyone should inform themselves in advance, weigh this up carefully for themselves and make decisions.

The borders with Georgia are straight forward. Have a look at the OB Map. I have created numerous POIs on the tour there - including for the border crossings, information and where you can get the necessary insurance, i.e. border policies. It is compulsory to get a vehicle liability insurance for Georgia. You can get it as usual at the border, where it is a little more expensive, there are also official offices a little further on, e.g. in the direction of Batumi - I have also entered this as a POI.

If you need any further information, just let me know.

Safe travels,
Bjoern

P.S. I'm moving this thread to the regional Asia forum to make it easier to find.

Are you using the App? Then you will see several subforums here when you go to 'by category'. Just go to Overland Bound by region and pick the region then.

Cheers

Hi Pete,

I also crossed the border between Turkey and Georgia with my family this August and I can confirm Bjoern's statements. We entered Georgia at the Sarp, Black Sea crossing. We found this crossing quite busy and crowded, a lot of vehicles lines. We chose a smaller border crossing on the way out of Georgia by Lake Aktac, where we were the only passengers in a 20 km long convoy of trucks, which we overtook.
The only difference we perceived when crossing the borders Turkey/Georgia was that the driver and vehicle must cross the border separately from the passengers who cross the border on foot, similar to airports. You reunite on the other side of the border.
As for car insurance, I arranged it on this link CIC TPL and received the insurance policy by email.
Enjoy the trip.

Regards, Simon

And how long did it take to get through each border crossing
Hi, entering Georgia at Sarp took us close to 3h and exiting at Aktac lake 45 min.

Regards, Simon
I have similar experience. Crossings straight forward, correct and comparable quick.

This is a small part of the blog I wrote from our travels - 2kiwisonthemove.com

Turkey: Then and Now

As we traverse this incredible country, my mind wandered back to my grandfather, who fought at Gallipoli in 1915.

Grandfather was raiding up toward Chunuk Bair with the ANZACs when a .303 bullet hit him in the chest, mere millimetres from his heart. Surgeons in those days were too scared to operate, so he lived with the bullet that close to his heart till he died in 1975. I have the x-ray of it, and in 2019, I took his watch back that he wore during the campaign and laid it on the sand, on beach where he landed at Anzac Cove. It was an incredibly moving experience as we experienced the dawn parade as well.

Yet, 34 years after my first visit, I couldn’t help but feel that Turkey has lost some of its old-world charm. The bustling bazaars, once alive with friendly banter and the thrill of bargaining, now seemed colder—transactions instead of connections. It felt like something precious had slipped away.

This saddens me immensely as I love Turkey and the experience as we cruise through Turkey is not what I expected. I feel let down.
Still, as we journey eastward, I hold out hope that the Turkey I once knew—the Turkey of warmth, hospitality, and magic—will reveal itself again.

The Turkey I kew and love seems to have lost that old world charm. What do you think? Am I being a little bit perverse expecting it to stay the same?

Pete
