Been looking at google and OnX off-road for trails bu all I’m finding is basic dirt roads. Looking for something simple where I can test out my 4x4.

There are a couple Off-Road parks around there (Northwest OHV Park, Endeavor Bridgeport), but for real trails through land to explorer, you're probably going to need to head north-east to Ouachita National Forest in AR. Farther away is CO, which will never fail you.

If you want to explore, your best bet to to do like roots66 said. Northeast Oklahoma in the Ouachitas is the closest for exploring. Texas is like the anti-mecca for overlanding. There is a little in Big Bend, but is you were to go that far you might as well go to New Mexico and do some real exploring.

there are a few off-road parks in TX but that's about it.

Not really in NTX:
Big Bend has trails, Padre Island National seashore (not really trails but can test your 4wd system)

I'm a little late to the party here, but DOMO offroad park near Gatesville and Hidden Falls in Marble Falls will test your 4x4 plenty. Check 'em out.

With a quick look, there is not much in TX if your mind is looking for Moab JR. lots of hills though. Here are the different views from 3 platforms. Trails Off-road is taking the lead for me.

Didn't see Merus Adventure Park mentioned, they have a variety of trails from easy to hard. It's a private park but was established for off-roading. MERUS Adventure | Off-Road Adventure Park In Texas

Very interesting place. It’s unfortunate that the 3 apps I looked at did not show this location. I guess since the apps are mainly user input driven no one has rated or flagged this location. In my trek out west this fall, I will be making this a stopping point to check it out! Thanks for the POI!!
