So, question. Do you actually need traction control for newer vehicles?

I thought TC was kind of standard on landcruisers in the years 2003 to 2010 but found out it isn’t haha. On the most sold spec it was an option and not much vehicles actually seem to have it. All have a locking center diff though.

But how much would you actually need TC? I won’t be going through mud every weekend and in the Netherlands we don’t have much hills :P so I don’t know? Will I miss having TC on it?

Searching for a vehicle that has TC would take ages I think. (also because over half of the cruisers for sale have their passenger seats taken out and modded to be vans so they are cheaper in the road tax for companies..

Traction control is for on road to keep you going straight. Off road it's not needed and usually not wanted.

I've had TC in my last... 4 cars.. But even on road wouldn't the 4x4 system alone keeping me going straigh as well?
Only few times TC kicked in over the years were in snowy conditions. and I hope 4x4 and good AT tires will help there.

Jeep uses TC along with other systems for its Brake Lock Differential (BLD), sort of their version of an e locker

There are many different types of TC most are not suitable for offroad. Manufactures that design TC for off road typically market it as such. Jeep uses brakes like mentioned above (I've driven a liberty with it, worked ok). Toyota has a few different versions of ATRAC which also works similar and depending version will or will not work with rear locker. I wouldn't consider these as TC but a feature that helps without having lockers. Also Range Rover, Toyota, Nissan and others have different version of downhill decent control also a form of TC but selectable. All have their advantages and disadvantages like everything... no silver bullet.

Believe it or not, Ford doesn't offer lockers in the rear anymore in their trucks (or, at least, not in my Expedition 2wd) - it relied on their traction control/abs/stability control (BLD-like) technology they got from Land Rover. Basically the computers doing all the work.

I always thought that was strange. But, as I wheeled my '07 JKU years ago, I never got stuck when doing offroad driving (reasonable offroading). I didn't know I had BLD, I just *knew* the JK performed way better offroad than any of my previous open-diff'd vehicles (2.5l YJ, 4.0l XJ, 4.0l TJ), etc. Half of the time I didn't even engage 4wd in inclement weather, the Jeep just powered through it...

We are at a crossroads between mechanical and computer/electronic 4wd systems... not sure that's a good thing or not... :-)

The Landcruiser I'm looking at doesn't have TC I think, it also doesn't have DAC (the downhill assist controll).

Not as much Landcruisers for sale that are in my pricerange and don't have a ton of KM on them.. So probably will get a LC with just the centre diff locker..

I came from a Jeep that didn't even have ABS, so I'm having trouble adjusting to the full stability controls of my Xterra. The thing freaked out on me in the snow and wouldn't let me disable it till after it finished throwing it's little tantrum. I was not happy about that at all.

Traction control has it's place, but I wouldn't let the lack of it keep me from buying the vehicle I wanted. It's great for slick parking lots at the grocery store but will cut engine power when you need it in slick situations where tire speed can be an asset.

With the Nissan VDC, if it is cutting throttle because you didn't hit the VDC off button, you need to let off the throttle completley and let the wheels stop spinning before it will go along with you turning off the VDC. If you simply stay on the throttle it will continue to cut throttle and flash the slip light.

Yeah that was rebadged as a Lexus 570 iirc. If you ever wanted you could als0 install an ARB rear air locker?

I was off the throttle as I turned and the front tires were pushing and not spinning so it thought I was still in a slide. I had driven it around town that morning with the VDC off and decided to give it a chance to see and from now on, I'm going to turn it off before going out in the snow like that.

Yep. I do wish the VDC was controllable by a dial and not just an on / off switch. While the VDC system works great, many times it is too aggressive and you will end up just standing there going nowhere.

My 2015 wrangler has traction control. I push the button to turn mine off when wheeling. It severely hinders you if you don't.
