Many years ago, my then girlfriend and I made many memories pulling our Jeep to a trail head and heading out for the day. Then life happens, my then girlfriend, now wife of 10 years with our 8 year old daughter, are looking to get back out into the wilderness. This time, with a more focused approach, we want to explore with our daughter and show her all the things we used to do, with the added benefit of spending time together and making memories. We currently are in the research phase of overlanding and making the many decisions that are required to do it in a way that will keep our daughter interested and with some luck, give her the passion for the outdoors that my wife and I have always had but have put on the back burner for a bit.

Currently, we are in a 5th gen 4runner LTD but we are now looking at some other options. High on the list is the new ZR2 diesel, followed closely by the T4R trail and the JKU Rubicon.

I plan to spend this winter, researching and collecting all/some of the gear required to start the adventure.

Take care.

Hi Tony. Nothing wrong with starting with what you've got! That 5th gen will work, a few mods to improve approach/departure as well as some wheels/tires will go a long way to getting you the car that is completely capable of doing what you want, and for a lot less money than shelling out for something new.

Good luck, you'll find a wealth of resources here to help you spend your money prepare your car for your adventures!

Welcome Tony, you've come to the right place to learn!
I'd say that you're on the right track making memories. We had great adventures with our two sons and now making outdoor memories with our grands.

Its the price we pay to play! The 5th gen is a company/work vehicle. It will need to remain stock. The wife's outback may be on the chopping block...

Hi Tony! I’m in a nearly identical situation life wise. After a 9 year hiatus my wife & I are returning to our adventuring with our 8yo daughter & 6yo son. I’ve found the advent of “overlanding” has really put a name to what we used to do & created a robust community. I’m reviving my old Pathfinder for now but helping build out a 2018 T4R TRD/Trail for my Mom which I expect will come my way in a decade. It’s a very capable vehicle able to haul a family, run long distance trips comfortably and still tackle trails with aplomb!

Hi Tony and welcome! I am also new, lots and lots of good info on here. Michael also makes some good informative videos on youtube. If you get the chance check those out they help a ton. 4runner makes an awesome rig. If I didn't need the bed space definitely would have went with the 4runner. Safe travels!
