I agree with @BoldAdventure, that its not common that you need to winch over rocks. Not to say it doesn't happen.

Use a rock guard, and call it good.
Yea, I should preface my comment that it can happen, but in my evaluation of switching to synthetic, I determined it's probably not going to occur as often as other recoveries where synthetic will just be better.

Are you going to buy for 1 out of 10 times or 9 outta 10 times. If that makes sense.

I totally agree. Buy Synthetic, and Carry a Rock Guard for the 1 in 100 times you need it.

I recently purchased my FJ and included was a Badland 9000 Winch. The cable has a bit of rust throughout, and being new to the overlanding/off-road world I was not sure if I should replace the cable. If yes - what do you recommend?

How rusty is it? If it's just some surface scale you can use a wire brush to remove it. Spray some WD-40 on a rag and wipe down the length of the cable to prevent more rust from forming. Or if you want to upgrade, get 100' of 3/8" synthetic line (AmSteel Blue or Dyneema SK-75).

If it hasn't been mentioned with use of Synthetic suggest buying a winch cover to keep the line out of the sun. Just out of the safety mentions and weight savings I'd go synthetic.
