I’m very new to overlanding, I currently dive an 87 Toyota 4Runner but I’m buying an 03 Subaru Forester because it’s better for gas but also better to go far. So if there’s anything I should add first or things I should avoid let me know and I’ll post my build on here

I think a roof-rack would be a good start. Cheap too if you keep your eye out on the used parts sites, craigslist, ebay etc. Won't just increase your cargo capacity, but also give you a place for dirty items, rather than inside.

Also some good recovery gear would go a long way. Small shovel, snatch strap, come along, recovery boards, jack of some sort.

If you have an automatic transmission & you're handy with electrics you could wire up a center-diff locker switch.
