Great time last night at M&J Automotive!! Mike and Joe put on a very informative show and tell about the need for a thorough pre-trip inspection of your rig especially before a long trip.
We had about 25 people and two lucky members got to have their rigs up on the rack for inspecting.

Training:
Some training topics were discussed and will be put on this years list. Please message me if you can think of other topics we talked about.
Field welding, using a 12v welder in the field.
Chainsaw use on the trail, not a certified class just a hands on review for trail clearing.
Winching and winches, winch selection, maintenance, rope vs steel cable and so on.
Tire repair, needs to be on a Saturday due to the time it takes to put on.
Tools carried on the trail (show and tell)

Upcoming Trips:
Usal Beach, Expo West, Carson/Pine Nut Range NV, Lake Richardson Crawdad feed (if the snow melts), Death Valley, Anza Borrego.
If anyone could take a trip on please message me and I can help you make that happen.

Next meeting is back at Dry Diggings in El Dorado Hills.

GENERAL DISCUSSION:
  • Past trips/runs

  • Adopted trail maintenance, Dave Dingal will talk about the Long Canyon OHV trail in the El Dorado NF
PRESENTATION:
We will start the recovery practice that will take about three meetings. This meeting we will discuss equipment and do some testing on pulleys and recovery rings. There has been an ongoing discussion about the use of recovery rings rather than pulleys, we plan to do some temperature testing during the talk. Hopefully Dave Dingal and Tom White will be at the meeting to help with this discussion.

  • Bring all the recovery gear you would normally have in your rig on a trip.
  • If anyone has a recovery ring please bring it. I also need a hitch link or hitch buddy.

As most of you who have come to our meet-ups know, I am rather skeptical about the use of Recovery Rings due to what I perceived was a large heat buildup that might damage synthetic winch rope. Here is a video that disproves that perception We will recreate this test at the next meet-up.

This all started with Tom White and I talking about weight reduction and wondering how much weight we can drop by just eliminating some of the heavy pulleys we cary .

Come join the fun next week.

NOTE; for you recovery purists, yes the test shows the soft shackles not properly installed in the system but I dont think it changed the outcome. :sunglasses:

So will this new found knowledge find you adding any of this new fangled tech to your kit? We have picked up a recovery ring and a dedicated soft shackle for 'testing' purposes, will have to be pretty convincing before pulling all my steel gear from the rigs. would be nice to lighten the recovery bag though. Have tested it pulling rigs around the driveway, but now need to lead some unexpecting buddy into a bottomless mud pit so I can test it out under extreme conditions...lol

Very interesting results from out test, we duplicated the heat test with three different rings.

I will put a review together and post it.

Safe travels, Kent! Looking forward to seeing your pictures when you get back. Would you feel like adding a slideshow to the agenda of a future meetup?

Also looking forward to the potluck. I’ll cook up a few things to share.
