I like the 4BT but I think a Land Rover engine swap like 300 TDI would be easier. I also looking forward to seeing the build and good luck.
I did a 300 TDI swap on a 1999 D1 with auto trans. Swapping for an engine the chassis is designed for (mostly) is way easier that fabbing up a fit. Easier is relative here :) I looked at the 4bt, the Mercedes 4cyl and an Isuzu diesel before I landed on the 300TDI. Importing it from the UK ended up not being that bad, and I think the conversion was significantly easier and actually less expensive over all. - The 300 and 200 TDI engines can be found domestically, but at the time I could not find one reasonably priced - it actually ended up being cheaper to bring in my own.I like the 4BT but I think a Land Rover engine swap like 300 TDI would be easier.
