Congratulations!!! The missus and I pulled the trigger six years ago this past July 1 and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. AZ is one of our favorite destinations as well. Now, if we can just get this virus mess to go away. we might see you out there later in the year.

I lived in East Mesa / Apache Jct. many moons ago. Played guitar in every club in the Valley during the late 70's/early 80's. That place was BOOMING. I had to get out, and did around 1982.

We used to ride dirtbikes up in the Superstitions in the early / mid 70's. Never found the gold....

I lived in Tucson working for the Forest Service, and I liked that area. Everything north and south of the Phoenix metro area is nice, Phoenix is way to populated for me.

I could pull the trigger now at 62, but have a daughter in college. It would mean a big pay cut, and I'm not quite ready.

I'll probably won't wait till full retirement age though......

What suburban are you using? Congrats btw. My son is finishing up university next march. He's off the payroll then. I have 3 more years of paying off our two rigs, and a personal loan we have. That's over 2000.00 a month off our books. I will be "retired" at 46 ish. I will still do some work Like I am now. But I am done as of now working for someone else. I am not that type of person.

Congratulations on your retirement. I’ll admit it is a bit disconcerting not having to save money, not working, and being able to actually play all the time. It took me about 3 weeks to get used to it

1 year, 3 months, 15 days, 3 hours and 30 minutes (but who's counting) until I close this chapter on a 36 year career with the same employer. On 10/21/2021 I will join the ranks of the retired and campfires, howling at the moon and scouring northeast Arizona and western New Mexico will NOT be reserved to a once in a while thing.

CONGRATULATIONS -- BIG TIME!!!!! Enjoy what you have earned, learn to coddiwomple and don't look back.

My Suburban won't be ready for pick up until November, in they mean time I just watch videos of people enjoying overlanding with misty eyes! :confounded: LOL

Congrats OP.

Don't see many full size Suburbans/Expeditions in the Overland scene, what's your build plans?
2 inch body lift, BF Goodrich K02 DT's 33", upgraded suspension and springs, Flowmaxx exhaust(love the sound), twin size bed platform, pull out kitchen, Goal Zero Yeti 1400, Dometic fridge/freezer and a Dometic 1200 fan. Rock slides as well, I just don't know what brand to get yet. That should get me out on the trails in comfort and I'll make adjustments and addons as I go.

Retirement...yeeaah! I was going to pull the plug this past Spring and be headed West about now. Along about December I started to feel like I should wait a little longer. Guess I'm glad I did. Money wasn't the factor, just a gut feeling. I still get out locally but this virus thing has sure put a kink in things. I have already told my boss I will be burning leave starting in October and be out completely by the first of the year. So, ya'll need to get a handle on this virus crap! LOL! Our new upper management with NO field experience has destroyed our morale to the point I will really feel sorry for those I am leaving behind. I have spent the last several years researching (how I ended up on this site) and building my kit. At some point I want to meet up with some of youse guise out in the far west and find some good fishing and camping. Ah, heyull, I might even make it to the left coast! Can't find any my homies or women around here that are brave enough or of the proper constitution to take the leap to head out with just a vague plan, except to catch some fish, with no timelines. Oh, well, guess it's just me for the moment and I sore ain't gettin no purttier!.

I know you think you are retired but yer avatar suggests a mid life crisis and four teenage daughters ... and a wife who just said "I'm outta here"

Naw, appearances are deceiving. I needed a Tacoma to negotiate the traffic during the week, I have an old full-sized 4X4 Chevy under the shed. I do have one son that is a grown-ass man at twenty and would make an Army Ranger cry to keep up with him. Did get divorced ten year ago! So, you got some of it partly correct! Oh, done shot mid-life in the ass too. My crisis is a strong case of wanderlust. I've seen just enough of the world to want to see a whole lot more. I just don't want to be hauling someone else's baggage all over the place. If they don't appreciate the beauty of fishing I probably don't have much time. Just a grouchy old man and, not quite retired.
