And another vehicle recovery practice is in the books. Aaron began the practice session with a brief review of what equipment is good to have and what we would use today. But first it was finding a volunteer to get stuck and another to do the recovery. Thanks goes out to the volunteers.

The first exercise was to demonstrate the difference between a static strap and a kinetic strap (non-stretchy vs. stretchy). Next Bill reviewed the use of recovery Boards and then Aaron took the reigns again on proper winching as well as the use of a hi-lift jack for winching (the hi-lift technique is definitely a “last resort” recovery).

Lastly, several folks practiced getting up the sand dune and finding that being aired down properly was extremely important.

RO Patch.jpg Reno Overlanding June Recap and Upcoming Events

Happy almost 4th of July.

This is a brief recap of June and to update everyone on what the plans are for the rest of the year.

June Recap

June was a fun month. On the 6th several went up to Bear Valley for an Overnighter. Aaron found a great alternate location from where we were last year. I believe we had 8 rigs on this trip with the furthest folks traveling up from Auburn.

The monthly meeting on June 10th had a dozen rigs in attendance. After introductions of the new members, we listened to a review of what tools one should have and bring to the “Getting UnStuck” guidance on the upcoming Saturday.

On that Saturday the 13th after everyone met up, we traveled up the rocky road to the sand dune. Before everyone attempted to climb up on flat top of the dune, airing down was the first lesson for not getting stuck. Once the rigs were on the dune, we purposely had the Jeep Gladiator get stuck so we could review several techniques of getting unstuck. These included—Kinetic vs. Static Strap; Recover Traction Boards; Winching; and finally using a High-lift Jack as a winch.

The final trail run in June was on the 21st up to Genoa Peak. This day run included a hike that took to participants to a signpost marking the spot of a plane crash a while back.

Thanks to everyone who participated.

Now onto the rest of the year.

The following table shows the upcoming meetings, Day runs, and Overnighters that are planned for the rest of the year.

The monthly meetings will still be held at the Hunter Lake Trail Head on the Second Wednesday of each month. Our Goal is to be back inside at a new location in South Reno starting in October. Stay tuned for more on this.

All Trail Runs and Overnighters will be posted as a Rally Point on the Overland Bound Website to RSVP. A link to the Rally Point will be posted on the Reno Overlanding Facebook Group and Instagram.

Wildwood Open Lands Foundation

We had a guest speaker (Jeff) from Wildwood Open Lands Foundation – a new organization located in Incline, NV. The organization’s vision is to “ establish, grow, and sustain an interdependent, tri-focused, organization that promoted the conservation, promotion, and education of natural and cultural resources through 1) global exploration and documentation, 2) acquisition, conservation, and maintenance of underdeveloped/open space lands, and 3) establishment and sustainment of a publicly interactive facility to display, engage, and support the messaging of the foundation”.
More can be found at Wildwood Open Lands Foundation .

Tonight’s Topic and Open Discussion: Compressors and CO2 Tanks

Points of Interest:
  • Both air compressors and CO2 tanks perform the needed task of airing up
  • If you can afford it and have space, carry both
  • CO2 Tanks air up tires faster and can be used with air tools
  • Check the Duty cycle of an Air Compressor. The closer to 100% the longer you can use the unit before having to allow it to cool off
  • Check the Cubic Foot per Minute (CFM) or volume of air flow a compressor can supply, the higher the CFM the faster a tire inflates
  • Air Compressors are available in portable and under-the-hood models
  • Multiple tires can be filled with the proper extension hose setups
Thanks to everyone for joining in the discussion and sharing their inflation setups

See ya at the next Meeting

We are heading out to Green Creek to camp this weekend and wondered if you had any tips or things to look out for. We've not been to the area so any advice you can share would be super helpful.

Nothing out of the norm. There are several different areas to camp. There is an established camp area and the rest if the area is primitive. I was there a couple of weeks ago and there were no bugs. However, this may have changed so be prepared. Fires are a no no at this point.

Don't forget that our meeting is on the Sept 9th at 6:30 at the Hunter Lake Trailhead. Bring shade, drink, and something to eat. The topic will be outfitting a rig and showing what you have done to your rig so far.
