Hey guys I'm looking for some info on the Georgia Traverse. I'm going to a wedding in Dahlonega, GA which is not far from the traverse so after I plan on taking a few days to explore and camp. Can anyone give me any advice on what trails would be good to try close to that area. Does anyone know of any trail closers and how accurate is the traverse map? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I imported the map into gaia and find it to be accurate. I cannot comment currently in road closures but generally detours are easy to find. Best advice I ever got was to jump on the traverse north of clayton georgia(off warwoman road) and travel west from there. I have done the entire traverse but you will get the best it has to offer by jumping in and going west from that point if you only have a few days. Beautiful river crossings and trey mountain.

Im headed up there this week and can advise if i see anything unexpected. I made 4 trips rhere last year and enjoyed each one.

I went and did it last year East to West and this year West to East going to and from Overland Expo East... there are only 2 sections that are closed... on the west side where you have the big loop that you can either stay south and stay in GA or go north up the loop into TN...the lower section is closed so you have to take the loop up into TN. Other than that there wasn't anything that was closed. We found good camp locations on the trail all 3 nights. We had a chainsaw with us and it was a good thing. We had to use it two times to clear the trail from storm damage. I had the routes uploaded onto my navigation tablet in offline mode using Gaia and did great. My profile picture is actually from us taking it back from Asheville last year.

Timely information, thanks! I had tentatively routed the southern section of that loop so I'll change it. NatGeo maps shows Road 630 to be gated just east of Randall, Ga. Any recollection of that?

Im not sure where you are calling Randall GA.. but Randall GA is in lower, central GA, below Columbus. Perhaps show a screenshot or post GPS coordinates

OK, now that I have effectively stolen this thread, (apologies to the OP) do any of you recent travelers see any problem for a retired old fart (ROF) and his wife doing the Traverse alone?
For much of the route you will have zero cell service. the North/East side of Tray Mountain is the only really difficult section that you will have to put it in 4L. If you are going west to east you will have a series of step downs / ruts if you are going east to west you will have to climb the ruts... you will have several river / creek crossings along the way and depending on how much rain there has been some could be deep. Just take your time.

Thanks for all the info how many days does it take to complete the whole trail? And any nice towns or land marks to jump off the trail and see?

Had a great trip last week. We did trey mountain road with some locals after a nice dusting of snow. I rented a cabin in Helen rather than camping this trip, but it made for a fine Christmas!

It was my first time to run Trey west to east...and most of it after dark.

As my trip is getting closer I’m trying to see where I’m going to start the trip from. I’ll be at wedding just south of the loop and was wondering if there any good areas around there to start and also to camp for the first night? Sorry for all the questions just don’t know the area. Was looking at it on Gaia maps but didn’t really see anything in that area to camp
