Douchebags and Douchebags that drive Toyotas.
So many here in socal.

Flat brimmed caps, face/neck tattoos. Will drive by you at 50 mph while you're airing down/up. Throw beer cans on the trail.
They'll also go on the badge of honor trails, holding up the line for everyone else, and stacks tons of rocks to get over obstacles when clearly they shouldn't even be on the trail.

you can pretty much look at a person's vehicle and tell a lot about them since vehicles are basically an extension of their owners...

think about it...a loud exhaust vehicle is usually owned by a loud exhaust person that demand attention. a fancy pickup with a spray in bed liner that is kept immaculate is usually owned by a guy who doesnt do any physical labor and wont get dirty himself. people with lifted vehicles with tons of unused accessories bolted to them are going to be people that capable of doing things, but lack the motivation/confidence to actually do them. dont even get me started on PT cruisers and EV owners...

so next time you are out traveling, find a person and watch them for a few minutes and then see what they drive. i judge people all the time and so far i have found that judging people on what they drive has been a very accurate and quick way to categorize people...
I like the thought behind it... but careful on being too judgemental ;-)

Sometimes circumstance and other hidden things can play a big effect too on people

Though I would agree that yes pretty much a lot of what people drive reflects their personality

Some would even break this down by brand eg. X brand over Y brand... say Ford vs, Jeep, vs Audi, vs BMW and so on....

But ultimately irrespective of what you *think* a person is like, it's better to be able to see if you can get on with them and they may just surprise you
It seems to happen a lot before marriage haha
Here’s a funny one that happened to me a few years ago. For context, I’m a woman and live in a suburban neighborhood where the majority of people drive smaller SUVs or fuel efficient sedans.
I’m walking from the grocery store to my truck (lifted black 4Runner Trail with lots of park/outdoor decals), admiring how shiny she looks after having washed and waxed her earlier that day. A guy walking near me sees the direction of my gaze and says with a snide laugh, “Somebody’s compensating.” I looked at him and responded, “Really?” as I hit the unlock and the lights flashed. I chuckled and he slunk away without another word.
I, too, have misjudged someone based on looks and was severely wrong, so I had no hard feelings about the encounter. It’s easy to fall into the ass-u-me trap!

Where you live plays a huge factor. I maintained one of the premier trails in my local mountains for a couple of decades. When it became a "Jeep badge of honor" Trail is when it got worse.
On the trail it was Jeep Idiots, mostly running non aired down 40's with as many led lights as they could fit. On the roads it was trucks. I guess if you have a truck you need to see how fast you can drift blind corners. It was so bad, I wouldn't go to my local mountains on holiday weekends.

In the early 2000's it was Jeeps again on the Hammer trails. If you didn't go as fast as they did, people were jerks even when we tried to find an area where they could pass. Snide comments about needing to step up were abundant. Rubicon and Dusy, same idiots in Jeeps. Music all night and drunken arguing. In the day, attitude and trash.

Small minds will point at a vehicle and label the person by vehicle. The idiots buy a trendy vehicle and act like idiots. Why is my experience mostly Jeeps? Because trucks cant easily go where I go. Mojave and Death Valley its mostly truck (and suv ) Idiots with a smattering of Jeeps. Ocotillo and Glamis its Side by Side idiots.
Before a person starts matching an idiot by what they drive, they need to step back and maybe get out more. Its always been the idiot who buys into a trend and screws things up.

This is really well put!

It goes along and tracks with what I mentioned above.

Sadly that is how the human race or rather society works.
How many videos on Youtube can you find of drunken soldiers in tanks running amok?

Overlanding (if we combine offroading and car camping here) specifically should be about getting away from crowds and the masses (including aformentioned "idiots") and going to somewhere peaceful and serene to relax

Soon I reckon Overlanders will start travelling to the far reaches of the universe to get away from everything (once space travel becomes common place of course haha)

But seriously it's such a shame....

I heard something similar locally about one of our tiny national parks being closed to camping because of the trash issues :-(
People wont learn and just don't care sadly.....

That exactly.
As my luck has it. most of my hobbies became fads at one time or another. Often I would stop doing that sport. If I start counting, rock climbing, backpacking, Guns, ATV's, sand toys, boats, rock crawl, desert truck.....and now "overlanding".

So yeah. Watched people be idiots with the worse being the ones who jumped into the latest fad. I also get tired of being included with the idiots because of what I drive at the time. Who has the right to call me out because I drive something nice and it happens to be trendy? In my Tacoma and in my Jeeps, I've spent decades picking up trash, scattering fire rings and fixing damage done to trails, just to have some Idiot make a snide comment about how I shouldn't be allowed on a trail because he feels I'm not qualified.

Idiots will be idiots

About 10 - 15 mins in from the beginning...

Picking up *trash*!!

Sigh.....

I think this was another *trash* awareness video (partly):

Was it towards the middle or end? Where he drops a bottle by the side of the road, then starts the "awareness" talk.
Even over in Costa Rica they cleaned up a beach.

Honestly, it reminds me of the movie WALL-E by Pixar.

It's just sad :-(

This conversation is begining to remind me of my ex-wife. When we met in ‘76 she had all the cool hiking gear of the day, hiking pants, a day pack, hiking boots, I of course had work boots and jeans. we never hiked while dating, plenty of time later for that. Eventually we went up to a section of the Pacific Crest Trail, a moderate section. She ended up screaming at me “don’t you ever take me hiking again “ because she was so uncomfortable up high. It turned out she had only been “ hiking” along the beach and at Mile Square Park. I’m a very slow learner, took 10 years to learn that lesson- ha! Thankfully I can laugh about it now.

Use to belong to a conservation organization and we did habitat work and clean up days at the surrounding state game areas. After eight years...the littering-garbage-human-beings...finally got to me. Still pick up stuff at state camp grounds or remote areas...because it just feels right.
