Went out with the wife today and explored a bit of our own backyard. There are a ton of waterfalls in our area and plenty of hiking trails so we hit some of those. Since we are still in lockdown we aren't really supposed to travel outside our own area so we figured it's a good time to explore a little closer to home.

I made a quick trip up north to visit some family last weekend and crashed for a couple nights on a nice rocky lake shore. Didn't manage to catch any fish but got some offroading in with some friends in the area.

This was more of a weekend of play than a weekend of exploration. It was a ton of fun even if we didn't go far from camp and I got to dial in my gear a little more. I ended up ordering a new radio setup when I got home because the LJ has been running a CB for years and it seems that everyone I go out with no longer runs them anymore. Upgraded to some GMRS units and ordered headsets to talk inside the jeep when on the highway. It was nice to finally get this rig out for a change and I am hoping to get back out soon. Maybe next time someone will get pictures of me ( unlikely the jeep seems to be cursed and there are never many pictures taken of it).

Very cool, and very interesting.

Old settler's place, or encampment for early miltary enforcements?

Of particular interest to me is the overall construction; which looks from the outside like hand-formed mud/clay and debris blocks built up masonry style. Shallow door on one side, tall door going to the header on the outside of the opposite wall.

Even more interesting are the square blocks above the header on the side walls, which are unusual in my experience. I have to wonder if they cover, and are supported by, the full thickness of the side walls. Judging from the view of the end wall and window in the first image, I suspect so. To see the overall thickness of the walls is really cool, and the presence of the vertical wood support in the thickness supporting the header is interesting, too.

I suspect it was a seat-of-the-pants type construction based on experience, and not on how things were done in their country of origin. Though I'd love to know who built it, where they were from, and when it was constructed.

I'm don't really have any information on this one. I wish I knew more because I enjoy seeing old buildings like this too!

Recently picked up a trailer to tow behind the compass for family outings. With our son being so young he seems to have a lot of stuff lol.
It worked great and I plan on doing a little more work to it to add kayaks on top but for now it hauls everything I needed it to for thi trip.

We moved away from the city when we had our son. Neither myself or my wife grew up in a city so we spent a lot time off in the woods.
The area that we are in is right at the base of a peninsula, tons of waterfalls, great fishing, and lots of outdoor activities.
The decision to move here was made because my wife's family is here and could help with child care, and I was a little nervous to move here because I didn't know the area and it doesn't have the "woods" that I was used to but it's only a 3 hour trip to visit my family on the other side of the bay and get into those spots I've visited since I was a kid.
It's worked out great for us and I really enjoy it here.

Went out hunting salmon again this morning. Has one snap my line right at the side of the boat, but I can't be mad because a bad day fishing is still better than a good day of work lol. Also the sunrise on the bay is usually pretty awesome.
