Welcome NJCoastal! There's absolutely nothing wrong with your vehicle. Spend time exploring the pines, polish your skills. Perhaps a set of traction mats or GoTreads, a shovel, etc & you're good to go.
The best modification is a tankful of gas!

Welcome.

All terrain tires would be the only upgrade i would consider.

In the meantime, you have all you need to get started exploring.

Just ask questions about an area...and learn how to turn around.

99% of legal dirt in the area can be done with just gas in the tank.

As you get braver...or as money comes in...recovery gear and a trail friend would be the best and most important investments.

And if you fall down the rabbit hole...it never ends.

I keep my rigs stock...food and gas is money more well spent.

what @DevilDodge said. Consider All-Terrains but ONLY when you're due for tires. Falken makes a "softroader" that is similar to the Wildpeak AT3W that seems popular with smaller AWD vehicles (Wildpeak AT Trail?) . @Dusther210 seems to be enjoying Westlake AT's perhaps he'll offer up some insight.

BUT,
this isn't a tire thread so again, WELCOME. Read, learn, enjoy & we'll see ya "out there"!

Welcome aboard @NJCoastal !
As what the guys mentioned already it’s best to go out and see what you need as you go, but traction boards are a really great investment. I have a friend that keeps a pair in his Hyundai Accent for winter time.

As what @MuckSavage mentioned I have been running Westlakes for years now (first the SL309, then the SL365) after switching from Cooper ATs and they have been pretty great. When I did Flagpole knob for the first time it was on Westlakes and traction wasn’t an issue. They are also quite quiet on the highways. I’m not paid by Westlake btw lol

But this isn’t a tire thread :)

Hope to see you out there!

Welcome to the Overland Bound community Joe. Glad to have you join us. You got some spot on suggestions above. Tires first, then as you can afford them you can buy the toys.
