That is Deer Moss it grows mostly on the ground it is very slow growing.

Built right on the river, you can tell it was once powered with a water wheel. which makes sense in it's day. In my travel in rural Pennsylvania, I came across a couple mill buildings that still had the foundation of the "power" room visible. Nice picture.Cool little water fall and fairly deep gorge in Nova Scotia. Called ward falls. We wanted to climb into the gorge but figured we better be safe so stayed out. A dslr with wide lens would show this much better than my cell phone did.

One post said they are Deer Moss. I didnt know what to think when we came across them on a trail.. there was a bunch of it. Looked like the forest floor was carpeted!Don't know what they are but they look cool!
