Fj80 toyman,

Thanks for the bypass advice. Are there other wet areas other than the lake and the Affton area to be concerned with?
Well, that is the desert, and you drive down/through a lot of washes as part of the road. Washes don't run frequently, but I have to say I would be cautious if it were raining a lot in the distance. Flash floods in the desert are nothing to mess with.

That said, they're very rare, just use caution and be aware of your surroundings and the weather. Make sure you have an out when you're in a wash - left, right, backup, whatever.

There are no specific areas besides Soda Lake and the water crossings near the end that I'm aware of on the specific track.

I'm anxious to go and find some of the springs that were historically used by cattlemen/ranchers. I've been there in extreme dry, can't wait to see them this year!

Dan.

Hay all! Just noticed this post.

We are planning to be down there this same weekend. Our plan is to detour down to Hole In The Wall and Kelso Dune via Foshay Pass. Here's our intended route: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jnm9WhxeT-BaLkYMTiSuj0Cy9E0&usp=sharing

We'll be traveling in our F-150 with two small boys so we'll be stopping everywhere that looks like fun, so I don't foresee being able to stick with the group, but It would be cool to meet up at some point.

I'll go back and read the whole thread now...

The current plan is to camp Saturday night at either Seventeen Mile camp or Green Rock Mill on the East side of Soda Dry Wet Lake.

We'll assess from there if it is still impassable, but it probably will be unless we get a very warm and dry month of March.

No worries, detours can be as fun as the original trail, and I DO NOT WANT TO SCRAPE THAT MUD OFF MY TRUCK AGAIN!

As for the detour near Fort Piute, it is as cool as the original road, however it's not marked with Cairns like the rest of the trail.
Just a little challenge to get through it, but worth the effort. Again, we'll assess the road closure at the time, meanwhile I'm going to confirm with the Ranger if it is still closed.

I like to follow the road closed directions if it will possibly get the road back open again any sooner, and that may be the case here.

That's why you get others to check the lake bed, so they have to scrape the mud off their trucks! Also I completely agree about following the road closed directions. While 1 or 2 rigs probably won't hurt the trail any more, I imagine that this large of a group would certainly leave its mark on an already damaged stretch of road.

So I've been thinking.. And if there is enough nterest.. I am a patch collector and was thinking about having a run of 50 patches made for this event. I have connections to make the patch but I need ideas on artwork. Is anyone else interested in a 1 off Mojave patch for this trip?

I was thinking maybe an oval or rectangle with a desert tortoise (maybe with a roof rack), Overland Bound and "Mojave Road 2017". That way it isn't too busy - it gets hard to fit a lot of text on a patch. We would want Michael's approval to use OB name.

The tortoise seems about right given how many times we'll have to stop with a group this big.

Is anyone interested in checking out picture canyon? My 12 year old is going to write up a report on the trip for his social studies class. We're hoping extra credit will offset the 3 days of school he's gonna miss.

I'll have to research where that is but I could be interested. There is also an e clampus vitus plaque on the road I want to stop and take a picture with, since I'm an ecv member.

Here's an early draft of the patch I'm using to get quotes on 50 units at 3" round size.
  • Artwork is NOT final - I threw this together based on a pencil sketch by the artist, who was just trying to verify the concept with me
  • Font is not right yet - I don't know exactly what font OB uses, but I'm pretty sure I don't have it on hand so I'm still searching. That ampersand!
  • Please check / verify my LAT/LON (I may chance to "N and W") because I rounded it a little bit and I don't want us to look like idiots with the wrong coordinates.

Right now I think the cost is going to be about $4. The quotes I've seen have been about $2.50 before velcro backing and shipping, I'm still trying to get a quote with velcro. We're pretty tight on time with this as most places seem to want 3 weeks for non-rush orders. I'm hoping to get a design to the maker by Monday.

Hi Tom, I like it! I only have one vote though, I'd also just run this by @Michael to get his buy-in.

Can I suggest that the Coordinates be those of the Mojave Road Mailbox? They are 35.1854, -115.6928 according to here

Check me on those as well, but looking at Google Earth, they seem to be the right ones.

I agree, will ping Michael once I have artwork I don't find semi-bad.

I'm fine with the mailbox coordinate. I assume nobody is going to use the patch for navigation.

Here's a revised version. I went to a brown on beige scheme as I think it's a bit closer to desert colors, and the green on beige made it look like a Boy Scouts badge.

I like this.. If you can get them done for the price mentioned earlier please do so if we can get them before the trip. I have no issue fronting the money to make this happen. My patch guy has not gotten back to me yet so perhaps he is going to lose out on this potential business.

I'm talking to a patch company now - still need to finalize art. I think we can get things down a bit more on price and they can do the velcro backing for us. Hoping to have a sewn proof early next week.
