View attachment 45635 Hello Everyone!

I’m Tyler and I currently live in Clovis, NM. I’ve been in NM for nearly 4 years and am looking to move this summer. I currently own a 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro (Stock). I’m looking to start modding/upgrading it soon, but it’s pretty capable as-is.

I’m new to overlanding, but not to the outdoors or 4x4s. In my life I’ve owned an ’86 CJ, ’95 Chevy, and my last truck was an ’08 Avalanche. I love hiking, backpacking, camping, and trail running. So overlanding seems like a good fit to me.

I look forward to being a productive member or the OB community.

Yep, 3/4 ton. 6.2 diesel engine, dual batteries and alternators for the 24v starter, no radio or a/c, military paint, brush guard, and other oddities come standard. It gets decent milage for and old school rig, is simple mechanically, and parts are plentiful and cheap. It's slow and loud and there are no creature comforts, but to me it's just fun. You can search m1009 or CUCV.
Lot of those things that keep it simple make it a great vehicle for extended travel off the beaten path. Sounds like a lot of fun too.

New member from the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain in south Louisiana. My first backcountry trip was my senior trip in 1970 to the San Juans in Colorado. First trail was the Alpine Skyway from Lake City to Silverton. I've been going back ever since with my latest trip a year ago to Big Bend. Retiring in May and looking forward to an extended trip this summer. Current ride is an '07 FJ Cruiser.

Our rigs are always a work in progress :)

I know, the weather is something else. I have an awning in my list, just haven't decided which one.

Hello everyone!

I'm Tim from Oklahoma City! My current overland rig is a relatively stock 2016 Ram 2500 Mega Cab. I haven't actually had a chance to do any real adventuring in it yet, but that time is coming soon. I have very little actual overlanding experience, but when I was stationed in San Diego, I took my 1998 Tahoe out on the trails of southern California and the Phoenix area as much as possible, sometimes for a night or two of camping. In fact, when I bought it in 2006, it looked brand new, was lifted, and 4x4 had never been used, so I took it to the trails before I took it home!

Hi Tim. Welcome to OB. Sounds like a nice Tahoe, and your Dodge is pretty nice too. What part of Phoenix did you explore? I used to live up in Scottsdale and then in Fountain Hills. Fell in love with the desert because of that area. I'm sure you'll have a find time breaking in that Dodge to some grand adventures. Stay safe and have fun.

Thanks Greg!

I haven't made it out to Alamogordo yet. I was training for the Bataan Memorial March, but I'm afraid I will not make it out this year due to work. Any good trails near White Sands, my wife wants to check out the area before we move?

There's a few, if you want a free camp area near white sands there's a section of places just off the highway where you can camp. White Sands itself has a couple of camp sites, but you have to be there early in the morning as there are only 2 or 4 or something and they are first come first serve. I'm planning to go there for a night soon, I talked to one of the rangers and confirmed I should be able use my RTT instead of hiking into the camp area as long as I didn't drive around after the park closes at night. Waiting for it to warm up a little first. There's hang glider point (??) that can be an interesting drive, the times I've gone up have been muddy and I've been alone so I didn't push it up the last stretch. Dry it would be a bumpy drive but nothing a normal SUV/truck couldn't handle. On a clear day you should be able to see most of the valley floor.

There are plenty of dirt roads and trails going towards Cloudcroft, and up there you get into parts of Lincoln National Forest with forestry service roads. There is one stretch that crosses several creek/stream beds, and if you come during or right after a rain, you'll be doing some small water crossings. Definitely need a high clearance vehicle of some kind, a Subaru Outback/Forester/Crosstrek or SUV/truck. Some of the FS roads can be really muddy too depending on when you go through.

Ruidoso and surrounding areas of the Lincoln National Forest also has lots of places to go. Many of these are essentially dirt roads, though some of the have enough ruts or other issues you need higher ground clearance.

Beyond that, I'm still learning the area.

I use a site called freecampsites.net
That list all paid and free camp sites with a rating. I often find some decent trails and camping sites.

Good luck!

Greg,

Thanks for the info on White Sands. As for Ruidoso, I'll download some maps and see if I can track down some forestry routes to explore. I've been out to Lincoln National Forest once back in 2016, but it was just a day trip to check out the area.

Dwrld,

Thanks for the tip, I'll dig around freecampsites.net to see what I can find.

Hey Gregory!

I don't remember exactly what the names of the places around Phoenix were. My roommate in the Navy grew in Fountain Hills, so we'd go there once in a while to hang out with his family. I think we would go to Sycamore Wash or something like that. I definitely miss the desert landscape and all the openness that part of the country offers. Out here in Oklahoma, everything is private land sectioned off with barbed wire fences, so there isn't a whole lot of just going out into the wilderness like you can do in the desert.

We made our way to to Sedona one time and ended up basically following a Pink Jeep tour one time. That was one of my favorite trips.
