maybe Arizona isn't as bad as I thought....(well, at least the very northern part...)

we were boondocking outside of page, az a couple weeks ago and decided to take a shower and put on something with sleeves and buttons and go into town to eat. we found a place called the rustic thistle and decided on it. I was going thru the breakfast menu when I saw "Build your own Breakfast Burrito" and it listed SPAM as one of the meat options! Yes! a nice restaurant in Arizona is serving SPAM on its menu.

(they also have glazed pork belly and andouille sausage...this isn't a restaurant, its a National Treasure!) :yum:

it was pretty good. actually, Arizona has held my record for the best burrito at a place called javalina cantina in Sedona. been going there the last 15 yrs and it has been holding the #1 spot all this time. however...on the way to gila NF this time, we stopped in hatch, nm and there I went into a very unassuming hole-in-the-wall place that served what can only be called THE BURRITO OF ALL BURRITOS, pork slow cooked in green chillies and then smothered with a green chillie sauce that was simply perfection. this burrito could bring about world peace, its that good...

I lived in Chandler in the late 60s and later went back to az and lived in Thatcher late 70s...so I've always been a fan of Arizona, but now New Mexico is looking pretty good! and when it comes to burritos, I consider myself a bit of an expert as seen in this thread Rolling a fatty in the Ozarks.....

If you get back to Arizona, check out Prescott. You can run from there down to Phoenix over the top on nothing but dirt. Another good scenic drive is the Mogolon Rim.

The Senator Highway begins in Prescott and extends southward, passing through areas like Crown King and Bumble Bee, before connecting to Interstate 17 near Cordes Junction. It's approximately 38 miles in length and is primarily a dirt road. Many will tell you it is a hardcore trail, but I think any high clearance highwaywill work.

There is gas available most times at Crown King, but beware the last time I was through there and needed to top off my can for my chain saw, it was almost $9 a gallon.

There is a beautiful road called Mogolon Ridge. It follows an escarpment west to east for over a hundred miles and offers tons of great camping with overlooks and is passable with anything that does not hug the ground.
