Looking to replace the muffler on my 2004 WJ w/ 4.7 V8. The stock one is leaking due to a rusted out seam and I am trying to resolve this on a budget. Catback systems are available, but even the cheap option is right around $300. Looking to spend no more than half that if possible. I've looked at some Magnaflow and Flowmaster mufflers, however I'm not sure on the inlet/outlet diameter on the existing muffler. I'm not really which route to go as the catback system would make this process easier, but will end up costing me more. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

Im pretty sure you have a 2.5in exhaust on the WJ. There is tons of aftermarket for them and looking around on google should help. You can always get a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler for pretty cheap. I have run those on several vehicles without an annoying "droning" sound. A muffler shop should be able to bend you some pipe and install it at a decent price.

You can also try to piece something together from here:

Did you do anything different to not experience the drone? I know the cat-back system has been claimed to have a drone around 2k rpm. I'm curious about that IRO cat-back system and if it'll take any extra pipe to make it fit right.

I didnt do anything besides install the Dynomax Superturbo Mufflers. They have a nice tone, especially when you get on it, and at cruising speeds, its louder, but not in a droning/annoying way. I have driven in cars where the resonance gives me headaches, but Ive had no problems with Dynomax. (BTW this is all with the 4.0L I6, not the 4.7)

Now, every person, and exhaust is different. Sound resonance is different for everyone. I would suggest reading through some threads on Jeepforum.com and Cherokeeforum.com. There is a lot of experience on those boards. Search around and you may find what you are looking for. You may even find someone close to you who would meet up and let you hear what their exhaust sounds like.

You could also just do a stock setup and not have to worry about the sound.

X2 of the Dynomax on the 4.7HO. We enjoy it. Yes, it has a little drone to it, but I do enjoy the tone. I assume your asking because stock is not an option and your wanting a different sound for the rig.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a cheaper option for now. Swapping out the junk stock muffler for a MagnaFlow. It had great reviews from the 4.7 WJ community and judging from the sound clips, it should do what I want it to do as good as all of your suggestions.

Search KOLAK Exhaust for WJ. He does a nice job in putting together a FlowMaster 70 for you. I just did this about 3 months ago. Nice sound to it but barely noticeable at cruise.

After putting about 2k miles on the magnaflow, I'm ready to either go with a stock muffler or the flowmaster 70. The dron from about 2k to 2.3k is HELL as that's the RPM operating range usually on the highway. I will give that a look and see about it, but I might just swap the muffler for cost savings.

The drone is about the same as stock. That is why I went with it. I love the sound but of a loud exhaust as long as I do not have to drive it for HOURS.....This may help. One note if you get on it, you will notice a difference over stock. At Cruise it is about the same as stock.

I'm strongly considering the 70 solely for the fact that I will be driving for longer stretches at time. Stock was definitely not bad when I drove for 10 hours straight, but this Magnaflow was annoying cruising at highway speeds for 9 hours.
