Hey, to be 100% clear, I was simply trying to encapsulate his point to make sure I understood it. If my previous posts were unintentionally vague: Actions speak louder than words. As long as you are safe, respectful and considerate of those who may come after you (I realize those are all open to interpretation, but let's just assume we mostly share a common definition, per Tread Lightly, etc...), I don't care what you drive, where/how often you drive it, nor do I care what you call yourself. Frankly, as long as you don't listen to Nickelback, we're cool (insert winking smiley face emoticon so you know it's a joke, but seriously don't listen to Nickelback).

I heard once somewhere , leave it better then you found it. Not always possible but I believe most people are firm supporters of it.

My view of "over landing" Has came down to just getting out of the city. I built my jeep to get me to cool places be that camping, climbing, disc golf, 4x4, camping, etc. What is different for me is I don't focus on the difficult terrain (4x4) I enjoy the trip and the scenery. The way we will keep trails open is become one as outdoor enthusiast. We all cross over some. I can have fun on a hard 4x4 trail with 4x4 types and I can also have fun on a fire road in 2wd to do some fishing and camping. Travel is great but I don't get to as much as I would like. I joined overland bound not to be in a elite category I just fit in better with outdoor types with vehicles to get there/stay a bit.

I guess after reading all these posts, many disrespectful, some bordering on sarcastic and asshattery I guess I will simply take my vehicle and just travel. No point trying to change thoughts on the computer as too many think they are keyboard commandos, lack respect for our environment and feel they are entitled to drive thier vehicles wherever they want to go and the hell with the rest of us. You can have the fad term "overland" feel free to use/abuse it though we all know what you really are. It's a shame where this activity has gone and continues to go.

In any case life is too short to spend on internet pissing contests.....

So, we either agree with you, or we want to destroy the environment?
Gee, how did I know you were going to come up with that lameness.
Typical.

The RV ers, called it Glamping, the hikers called it mountaineering, now the Jeepers, are now the bad guys, as " overlanders". It's taken the place of camping, most of us respect the environment, we take out more than we bring in, most of us see this a a norm. There are a select few otherwise. We need to focus this forum on overlanding not 90s music, although Sirius give one a boost, haha. Let's get back to discussion. Requests, ideas, tech support, home builds, help in any way we can, we're in this together, get out and camp.

This discussion has been going on since before overlanding was coined to mean living out of a vehicle. From the many blue in the face discussions about every word applied to motorized / wheeled sports (overlanding, 4 wheeling, motorcycling, snowmobiling, bicycling and even horse back), in the end, we're all on the loosing side of the battle when we don't bond and work together.

To the OP, please consider if the exclusivity of the word is helping keep trails open? Commercial retailers have told us that overlanding is cool, right? And the news has told us that 4 wheelers are tearing up the land, right? Unfortunately calling some an overlander isn't a code of conduct (though it should be), every group is going to have that 1% that ruins it for the rest of the us.

Dirt roads are simply being closed because of damage, they don't need to official close them, they just don't fix them indefinitely. It's not just "extreme" forest trails.

What can you do? Join / donate to non-profits that support motorized / wheeler travel, come out and volunteer to maintain a trail or road (with the support of the local agency), write and call your senator and tell them that motorized recreation is important, let someone know if they're endangering access for others, and last but not least, help your fellow man (or women). If you see someone stopped when your overlanding, stop, say hi, ask if they need help.

In the end, don't get hung up on the us vs them. If you were stranded on a road with no cell reception, I bet you'd be happy for a fellow 4 wheeler stopped to help you too. Remember to always pay it forward.

At this point I really don't care anymore. If I see some irresponsible person doing something stupid I'm going to report them to the first ranger I see complete with plate number and photo. I'm not going to financially support any vendor or group that encourage irresponsible land use. Finally I'm going to continue simply minimizing my impact the best I can to enjoy the environment we have left. With the current history of climate change deniers, business interest over conservation ethos and unchecked resource extraction we all need to simply "get out there" and enjoy it

I'm here in this group simply because there are many here who feel the way I do about these issue and want to maintain and enjoy our activity inclusivly and responsibly. There are those in this thread alone who are obviously not willing to follow these ethics and they are simply ignored, thier voice falling on deaf ears. @Michael made an interesting and enlightening point in one of his early podcasts about coming from a small town and being an ass in a small town gets you no where. This is why I'm just simply pointing out the obvious and hope others realize that we can't just be jerks and do what we want without recourse. Overlanders, 4wheelers, drivers, jeepers...or anything it's time to be responsible and call it what it is.

Did I miss something? I don't remember anybody advocating irresponsible trail usage in this thread.
