My wife and I finally got into Canada! Planned for two years, but here now. Anyone near Banff?

Wondering if anyone has crossed into Canada recently.

They don't tend to tear a car apart for nothing or separate people, out of curiosity you mentioned having items seized care to elaborate. As to your dog that is for your dog's safety, caged and muzzled the dog is not a threat.

I do however suspect the current political tensions have a lot to do with it, too many illegal border crossings from the US to Canada in the last few years. The border services are very concerned about people crossing and then claiming asylum and we don't have the capacity.

Nonetheless, it is a bad way to start a trip and you may face a wee bit of anger directed at you, it is not right but calling us the 51st state and calling our head of government a governor thing has people really pissed off up here.

Fascinating, good points. Especially about the political climate. I wish I had better news about "that guy" at our helm, but as an American, I am embarrassed. Thank you for being honest on this post, near Banff, still pushing through.

I’ve crossed the border into and out of Canada an uncountable number of times- ( 2-3 times a week for 15 years) one might say I’m an old pro. There are a few things that the driver and passengers should never do and a few things you should always do. We do not have, nor will we have a dog until we are done traveling. We, my wife & I, love dogs but like it or not, it is a hassle sometimes to get your dog into and out of the country. Did you and your passenger remove your hats and sunglasses? Did you attempt to make small talk? Were you overtly friendly? Any political stickers on your vehicle? When they began searching your vehicle did you protest or ask questions? A couple years ago I advised my brother-in-law about how to behave when crossing. He saw no reason to remove his hat, and he did not curb his attitude. He talked loud, and made light of the, what he thought, were stupid questions. He was obviously pulled in, then instead of buttoning up, he kept asking questions of the inspectors. Another CBSA agent led him off to the little white room. I witnessed this from afar and kept thinking, John- shut up! Thankfully they surmised he was harmlessly ignorant and preformed only a cursory inspection. With todays atmosphere they may have strip searched him and his vehicle. I have many friends in Canada and have accepted their sympathies and condolences. We have reservations for a ferry ride to Newfoundland this summer. Hopefully the chaos that the current administration has incited simmers down and the border crossings return to normal. Peace out!

Although I agree with “most” of your comments concerning international border crossings, dont be a jerk, don’t be obnoxious or offensive, Im with ya on the adulting principle!

YET, you have no problem being a jerk, obnoxious and offensive to the very community your are speaking to. Your “orange idiot” political “opinion” is yours and I spent my life blood protecting that right but Americans have voiced their opinion and voted DJT into office. Deal with it. No one is asking you to like him AND here you are taking a childish pot shot with your political opinion.

You “advised” your brother in law to be courteous and upstanding so I am going to do the same for you. Be courteous and upstanding to those around you. Why risk offending your readers and pushing them away? We don’t know each other but in the woods we are equal/peers and the camp fire should be about our rigs and coffee!!! So I am asking you to rethink your comment and take the high road and be above the insanity of the world.

I am sure or hope that those that paid the yearly fees to be on this site want to talk about the outdoors, not tap dance around politics. If your butt hurt by this push back or by this common sensical approach, enjoy! See ya on the trails!

You are correct. I’m not butthurt at all. The phrase should not have been made- I know better. I’ve edited it. Thanks for pointing it out, as I can sometimes be negligent when it comes to censoring myself on public forums. I’ll add though, that political comedy in our household takes no prisoners. They are all human beings that have egos bigger than we can imagine and they all need to be made fun of, but not here on this forum. See you at camp!

we are all still waiting to find out what it was that the border patrol confiscated . There is a very short list of things that we cannot bring into Canada. If you had anything on that list, then were not honest about it, then lesson learned, they detected unease on your part and did their job. 45 minutes is nothing. You could have easily been held there for 4-5-6 hours or more. Curious minds want to know- what did they find?

Look me up if you are in central. Might be house bound for the summer with a surgery on my stomach. So more than likely I will be close to home this year.

Ouch- our first region to explore will be the maritimes, then headed south for winter- then across the south, making our way north for the summer of 2026- we must meet sometime. Since we will be having plenty of time to immerse ourselves I’m hoping to meet with more than a few folks on these forums.

Glad to see things settle out, @MOAK keep an eye on the border situation there is some indication that the Canadian government may start adding travel restrictions for US travelers, to combat some of the stuff going on down there. So far just rumor and angry voices, based on a few incidents but these days you never know.
