I was sitting here impatiently waiting on a late truck reading posts and noticed there is a lot of posts about MPG and that got me wondering whats the difference in fuel costs depending on what kind of mileage your getting . trying to show what it would cost you for a long trip , between oil changes and annually , and doing the math assuming average fuel cost of 3$ a gallon .....soooooo here goes nothing .

long trip , 1500 miles
MPG=GALLONS of fuel=COST for 1500 miles
10 = 150 = 450$
15 = 100 = 300$
20 = 75 = 225$
25 = 60 = 180$
30 = 50 = 150$

oil change 3000 miles MPG=GALLONS of fuel=COST for 3000 miles
10 = 300 = 900$
15 = 200 = 600$
20 = 150 = 450 $
25 = 120 = 360$
30 = 100 = 300 $

annually 20K miles
MPG = GALLONS = COST for 20k miles
10 = 2000 = 6000$
15 = 1333 = 3999$
20 = 1000 = 3000$
25 = 800 = 2400$
30 = 572 = 1998$

Some folks drive small AWD vehicles, some diesel, and some huge heavy trucks. MPG can't really be compared.

I don't have any idea what your charts above indicate. Lots of existing threads on what MPG folks here are getting.

wasn't trying to compare mpg , trying to show the what kind of $$ you are spending for different distances . Not sure why the margins end up so different from what I put posting it from a computer but hopefully it makes more sense now

I have a diesel. I planned on a lighter, long distance rig. With all the services so far, I'm at about $.16 per mile. So a 1000 mile trip costs about $160 for fuel and services that will be needed. It's a new rig, so services are a little more expensive, but they are pretty spread out over 7500miles or 42k for thinks like air and fuel filters.
My last rig only did about 12mpg but was a full size diesel, so it was more than 2x the cost to drive ($100+ DIY oil changes) so I rarely left the state as it was just too expensive.

No one mentioned what happens to fuel mileage once we go off road. My 12 mpg is fine till I touch dirt. In 2wd dirt I think I lose 3 ish, 4wd probably a bit more. Low range...half, easy.
I think my TJ drops to around 3-4 mpg in low range. Don't spend much time in low but it all adds up.
