Well I’ll probably get chased out of the forum with torches for this but I ended up going with the ranchos. My reasoning was pretty straight forward, my entire objective for shocks was to improve ride quality because my current suspension makes long drives uncomfortable at best. After reading reviews by quite a few people with tons of tj specific experience (Blaine, jerry bransford, etc) they all agreed that while the bilsteins were a product designed for higher performance, they also led to a firmer ride so they switched to ranchos. I also believe e that many of you running 6k lb rigs may experience different results than my sub 4K tj. The reviews also stated that the 5000x was a much different product than the older 5000s that many have switched from. As ride quality was my number 1 objective with affordability being 2, I went ranchos. You may throw spears now [emoji17]
No one should get their panties in a wad over what you choose, if its giving you the ride you wanted thats great.

No one will through spears Dustin. It's your rig and you know what results you want. I think we all gained knowledge from the conversation ! That is what the forum is supposed to do.
Now go find out for yourself..

Hopefully I have early results next week. If I made a poor choice I’ll gladly admit my error! I do appreciate all of your advice.

Honestly they work fine. We have them in the back of our truck and they do ok on that. I don't like em for the front however, but that problem is getting fixed this weekend. Let us know how they end up working for you!

Also sounds like getting the AC fixed was a good call, haha.

Dustinfromohio,
It took me years to do, but I took an ARB twin air compressor, and have it setup as an portable, instead of mounting it in one vehicle. With the tire size you will be using, I would go with the 400P. The better duty cycle does make a big difference! Besides, having the portable air system, you will be filling everyone’s else’s trucks too, after wheeling! Haha. Vance.

I came across a small discretionary budget recently and I want to use to to better equip the rig before my sept DBBB trip.

Current setup:
2002 TJ
3” zone lift
32” Toyo AT2s

Needs:
Rancho rs5000x shocks $220

Wants:
Winch- Warn M8000 $630, VR8 $450, other brand?
Sway bar- Currie antirock $400, jks discos $125
Some type of air- haven’t looked much
No lift jack?

Any suggestions??
Grab a winch 1st thing it's best and some recovery tracks . Even the knock offs if ya have to . Recovery tracks about 65$ to 75$ on Ebay but the real ones about 150$
Good luck on your build up !

Looks like decisions were made and money spent, but figured I would go ahead and throw in my 2 cents for future readers with similar considerations..

First, I think as to the shocks, there are arguments for both and I don't think either is drastically better than the other. I will say that on my JKU, I had the Ranchos and swapped to the Bilstein 5100's, and have been happy with the decision. They were stiffer at the beginning (which I actually liked) but loosened up some after the first trip with some weight and flexing.

As to the winch, I echo the sentiments of getting a synthetic rope, whichever you go with, if it's in the budget. When I bought mine, I was stretching the budget a bit to get a winch at all, but was preparing for a trip with a lot of solo travel and I opted for the additional piece of mind and got the steel cable. I am now looking at upgrading, but will do just the line and fairlead, so it's not as much of a hit as buying the whole thing at once. As far as brand, I am also a believer in spending more for a quality product, and if the budget is there would go for the Warn too. That said, I have the Smitty XRC and it has done the job well. Of course, I have only actually 'needed' it twice, but still pull the line to clean and lube after trips, and test it before going out.

As for Air.. I have had my current Viair 88P since Jan '17 (~2.5 years) and have never had an issue with it. It has been primarily used for my Jeep (35x12.50x17) and has worked just fine though I will add a couple caveats; 1. Most of the time I air down it's for mild stuff, and I only drop to ~20PSI. Since I normally run about 30PSI in them on the street, I can fill all four before needing to give the compressor a rest. When I have gone really low (around 10PSI) I have done it in stages, since in those cases I usually only had to go so low for a couple obstacles and brought them back to ~20 until getting back to blacktop.

I know when I bought it I looked at the duty cycle, and though I don't recall the specs off-hand, I recall I had calculated that as long as I kept the run time under around 15 minutes and rest it if it was taking longer, it should be fine. Using it under those limitations, I have not had an issue after 20+ uses. Of course, it's not the fastest at < 1.5CFM and I have certainly been eyeballing the ARB Twin with its 100% duty cycle and > 6CFMs! My buddy has one in his truck and I actually used his to air up in Moab since it was faster to wait for him to air up his 42's, and use it than to mess with my 88p. :p

But overall, I don't think @Dustinfromohio made any poor decisions.

Dustinfromohio, You are doing just fine with your gear and spending the cash. Many years ago I picked up a gel seat cover for the wife, she loved it.

Well it took a bit longer than I expected but the new shocks are on as of last night. I went ahead and added a couple coats of paint and clear coat prior to install after reading a few reviews about the paint being too thin. I didn’t finish install until late so I only got a spin around the block but initial impression is very good. I’ll post a more detailed review once I’ve ran them for a few days.
