My wife had never camped until she met me. She loved it because we started small, camps with showers, using a hotel every couple of days, making sure she had a great time. Within two years we were self stained for weeks at a time. Our honeymoon was 10 days to La Paz, Baja Sur and back. We camped for 30 plus years. I lost her 4 years ago, I value our trips so much more today. You have no idea loosing your spouse will F up your world, cherish your time with her or get out if you can't. YMMV.
So sorry for your loss. Like you said, cherishing the memories. So True!

I realize the joking nature but ease her into it. I've found that establishing some "oh shit!" measures help because if you're experienced, she will soon realize how much more capable you are of being self-sufficient than she is. Things like Garmin inReach or similar and teaching them to work a radio have done wonders for her peace of mind but teaching them survival skills like lighting fires will massively increase confidence.

I definitely loved my solo camping but honestly, the look of sheer awe and joy on my wife's face as we drove through AZ and CO the first time she had ever been outside Denver or Phoenix told me I found a winner. I honestly wouldn't have it any other way.

Not sure about your lockdown status, but I have been trying to get my wife onto the trail for years. When we had to cancel our planned beach vacation for COVID, she soon approved of trying overlanding. I think she just wants to get out and do SOMETHING, even if she thinks she will hate it (I know she will love it once she starts).

It sounds like she wants to involve herself in your outdoor activities more, this is a good thing. I personally didn't marry my wife just to have an organic dish washer, I married her because I like to spend time doing things with her, this is great news to hear.
I couldn't agree more!

Yeah this is very similar to my situation too. I'd go out a few nights at a time to do some shooting or exploring. All BLM land, no bathrooms, just straight roughing it with dehydrated food... I have simple needs. One time my wife asks to come with. Having never camped in her life, I was a little skeptical. We started on some actual camp grounds. She seemed to enjoy it. We gradually moved up and out to more desolate land. We ended up running into some pretty brutal weather at times, but she was all in. We have since upgraded the RTT, obviously upgraded to a actual cooking setup, gear on the truck upgraded to hold the entire family and the dog comfortably. It's all been good. We rarely have hobbies of similar interest besides our kids, so it's fun growing closer together on this. Enjoy it and go out and have an adventure!

Let me clue you in, get here a porta potty.
That's the best thing you can do. Trust us. I enjoy camping with my wife. We had plans to go camping with our adult kids and grandkids last year. Wife wasn't feeling well with a headache so she decided to stay home. The second day I called to see how she was feeling and she felt better and wished she had come along. So I told her to get ready I'll be there in 2 hours. I think that was the longest 120 miles I'd ever driven. She was so excited and we had a lot of fun. Good times.

You'll be fine, OP.

Similar experience. Wife's idea of outdoorsy had always been cutting through the Bass Pro parking lot to get to Starbucks. In 35 years of backpacking, she came along exactly never. Which was great for both of us.

3 years ago, out of the blue, she asked to come on a Colorado trip after I'd bought a RTT a few years before. Like you, a quick mental checklist of what this was really about netted zero........... so I said sure thinking this will be interesting and likely a once and done.

Asked for advice on multiple forums, got a boatload. Two responses in particular were from women who, like my wife, originally just wanted to know what the heck it was all about. Both said they immediately connected with the Starbucks comment and gave just the greatest advice to a dunderhead when it comes to camping with women.

So, fast forward to Silverton Colorado in mid-September 2017. Daytime highs in the 50's, lows in the low 30's. Rain. And more rain. And then more rain. The women told me to get a good French Press and learn how to make her a good cuppa coffee. Had some other thoughtful ideas that I'd have never thought of (hot water bottles on her side of bed before turning in, etc.). The weather insured it wasn't a fun trip, but it was real. The scenery, however, was spectacular. Aspens were in two-thirds color.

So after 6 days and somewhere around half way on our way back home..........she looks at me and says it was the best trip she's ever been on and if she could come along again.

Do you remember when you knew she was the one? Happened to me twice. 37 years apart.

You'll be fine.

Just make an effort.
