Interesting. The property lines were accurate up here in North Idaho. I wonder if they're using old survey data where you're located. Have you used anything else for hunting?
They must be, pretty disappointing since it's a great idea if it worked for me. Since a couple other friends had similar results we decided it was useless for us. Maybe it'll eventually get better.

Gaia is doing a 1 month free trial in case you want to see how it works.
Otherwise it is only $30 a year, a few bucks a month. The service is great. I almost don't even use my Garmin any more. I have found that you can have multiple devices going at a time. I keep my iPad and iPhone going at the same time so if I want to get out and walk around I don't have switch or start I can keep one fluid route going. When using two devices they show up in different colors.

I've been using both. Both have their use. I use the Xmaps chip in my garmin handheld for when I am on foot hunting. Seems accurate. I use Gaia in my truck on my tablet for in vehicle exploring. The main downside to the Xmaps is its a chip that they want $100 that I may want to buy new every 2ish years. I like my handheld for on foot as it's more of a go/no go/ "where the F am I?" I tool than mapping and logging tool for me.

Why not just have a rugged waterproof case for your phone and avoid paying for a chip? Regardless if you choose to use Gaia GPS for hunting or OnX. Seems like an unnecessary expense.

The GPS antenna In cell phones is NOT that strong. Here in MN there are many times both cell and GPS signal is lost on a cell phone. I will never rely on my phone for anything while out in the woods.

With that said, I had the handheld and the Chip long before I was aware of Gaia and before they had the public and private land layers available.

With that said, I like being able to turn on my handheld GPS and clip it on my pack and not worrying about GPS signal/

Good assessment, I have yet to gave GPS signal issues with any of my iPhones. I don’t rely on cell coverage when off pavement. That’s why I have an InReach. (Separate topic and threads).

I’m not a hunter so I can’t share same experiences with you. I have seen my inReach lose contact with satellites in deep woods for communication but not gps.

Thanks for sharing.

yes. It's the deep woods where GPS and cell signal can not be what you want. In fact, I've been in wooded areas in the city and have had my phone (android based) loose one or the other.

I have had a few instances where after being out in the woods for an extended period of time, it required me to restart my phone as it won't lock on and I assume something went wrong from the time the phone spent looking for signal / gps.

Different parts of the world and different terrain are probably different, but, for me in MN with thick woods in remote areas, A cell phone is of not great use.

I believe Gaia has the private property overlay, with owner's name, as part of the Premium subscription. We had a Gaia workshop for our local SAR team tonight. I'm new to this and will definitely look into the Gaia Pro 1-yr. deal.
