Do you use your awning?

So this is not so much a “which awning do you have” but more in terms of do you find it useful? I love the idea of one, as I love the idea of a lot of things on my truck but I wanna make sure I am doing things that are most beneficial.

So, do you have an awning? Do you use it? Have you ever used it when not camping or over landing? Do you like it? Do you regret it? Throw all your thoughts and opinions at me!

I appreciate it!

We have a Fiamma enclosed roll-out awning on our camper and it's fantastic. We use it all the time, in the rain, and especially to shade us from the sun.
I'd never not have an awning again. I can't really comment on the ARB or Bat-Wing type awnings for difficulty of deployment vs whether or not it's worth using, but my Fiamma fully deploys or retracts in about 60 seconds and we tend to use it all the time.

I have two DIY setups I built off evldaves writeup in Expedition Portal, I use them quite a bit for camp, fishing, working on the rig, at the range..... They come in handy when you hate the sun. My 50.00 investment has paid for itself several times over. I'm about to combine them into a 270 degree setup I like them so much.

We have an Oztent Foxwing 270deg awning and use it all the time. We're in the desert where shade is hard to come in many spots and it's a life saver. Takes about 3 or 4 minutes to set up, and same to take down. We also have a floor saver (heli mat that lays on the ground) that is the exact same footprint as the awning. Having the awning out and the floor saver down makes it feel almost like a living room. Keeps all the dirt/sand out, too

Can you share a link to that? I'm currently using a Harbor Freight tarp and tent poles. I'd like to up my game a bit.

I was on the fence about getting one, but found a Yakima on close out for $175 at a local shop... So I picked one up. I've used it a couple of times at the beach to eat lunch under, out of the sun between surf sessions. Works like a champ! Can't wait to use it while camping. Here's a pic when I was installing it.

He should win an award for the comedic value of this write up alone. I used the heavy duty silver tarps, going on the end of two hard used seasons, and still look new. I opted for Cabelas flick lock tent poles for the sides (perpendicular to the mounted emt), the awning gets drum tight with them.

I made a "Homemade" awning and added this to my Morris Mule Trailer last year before heading out for 4 months-price was right-silver tarp, many additional grommets, laced the tarp to conduit- just to many moving parts-poles etc. Also no way to adjust the height of poles-to keep the rain from pooling and just to small. This was replaced this year with a ARB2500. My problem is where I camp most of the time and what I do in addition to camping-exposed on the beach, open areas around lakes, or just areas that I know the wind will be picking up in a major way later in the day (when I'm out fishing, hiking etc).

I think the type of camping area you camp in is a major concern that many don't consider. I haven't used the awning this trip at all-(been on the road three months so far). Also the fact that the ARB2500 and my Tepui tent are both mounted on the trailer-which provides shade-whether the tent is opened or not. No cover from that sudden shower that pops up-but it's a trade off, considering where I'm camping most of the time.

Hope this helps
Bob

I may not use it as often as I’d like but when I need it I’m glad it’s there.

Have the ARB2500 mounted on my Jeep and the Foxwing 270 on my trailer. I use both, all the time, and would never not have an awning again.

Personally, I really like the ARB2500 on the Jeep, especially when I attach the ARB Touring Awning Room-this makes for an awesome, quick camp/tent setup when I plan a quick getaway and don't take the trailer with the Tepui.

The ARB2500(or any awning of that style) is super easy to setup, easily done with just one person. The Foxwing is just as easy-I just don't use that one as frequently because I don't always have the trailer.

I love mine, it's one of the most useful items I've added to my truck, if not THE most useful. Relief from the sun or rain is absolutely valuable.

I appreciate this thread. My wife and i have put an awning at the top of our "need but don't have" list after every trip we've done this summer. This is good confirmation. We do in fact NEED an awning.

That is where we are. We have the mounts, just deciding if $300 for an awning is worth it. I think everyone here made a solid case for it :)

Yes. The easier it is to open, the more often you will use it. We have a Eezi Awn that opens in seconds. Last weekend..lunch stop with a view69F7E1F3-0236-4E50-97D4-B6D7B5B69505.jpeg beach side shade, also covered us from a hailstorm 30 minutes after this B5DB07B4-9C1D-4982-B108-FE7D405023AC.jpeg

we use our 50% of the time. Rain down pours it has worked well keeping us dry. I have Tuff Stuff 4x4 4ft 5" x 6" Awning on the back of my overland trailer. We can add on to our awning w\ Tuff Stuff 4x4 Awning Shade Wall by using it as a sun blocker or to add on to our awning to make it 12ft long just adding 2 adjustable poles.
