Hi all, trying to feel this app out.
My wife and I are looking to start traveling more as our kids leave the nest. I'm thinking our first trip would be the east coast of Canada, starting in Ottawa (where we live), heading up the north shore of the St Lawrence and crossing at BaieComeau. Eventually ending in PEI. We would probably save Nova Scotia for another day. Do the bay of Fundy, and head home.
I'm not sure how long to plan this out? What are the must see stops? Quebec city, Tadusac for the whales, what else? What off the Beaton path sights are there?
We have a Subaru Crosstrek that will be fitted with all terrain tires and a roof top tent.
Any guidance and suggestions would be appreciated, probably still a couple of years away, but I would like to start planning this now.
Thanks for any input and guidance on this.

Hi: a couple of thoughts:

We are all different (isn't it great!) so in terms of timing only you can judge how long you will need to enjoy your trip. Our usual average is 170 km/day, however in Canada we have found that we travel further on average. On this year's wander around Western Canada, and including a circuit of Cape Breton we averaged 246 km/day; much of the difference was simply long distances between destinations.

Your trip is going to be 3000-4000 km so this would be a trip of somewhere between 12 and 24 days for us .

The "must sees" will depend on your interests - La Mauricie NP?, Quebec City for sure, Montmorency Falls?, Baie-Saint-Paul Museum of Contemporary Art?, Grands-Jardins NP?, Hautes‑Gorges-de-la-Rivière‑Malbaie NP?, Fjord-du-Saguenay NP?, Miguasha NP?, PEI NP?

Any particular reason for the delay? This is not meant to be provocative, however why not just head out? Perhaps not today, now that Northern Hemisphere winter is approaching, but Spring is a great time of year to head out.

Thanks Alanymarce for the sight suggestions, this is the input I am looking for for this trip. Locations to research and determine if we would be interested in stopping there.
I would like to make a list of sights and then sit down and figure out the distances in between and how much driving I would like to do in a day.
The reason for the delay is that I still have a 14 year old at home who needs to go to school during the school year. I suppose we could go in the summer, but she doesn't like long road trips and my wife and I don't want to hear the constant complaining. I know it sounds harsh, but we want to take our time and enjoy the trip.
I don't think we could leave her home alone for the 3 weeks I'm estimating this trip would take.
Short of the obvious destinations(Green Gables, perce rock) I don't know what is worth stopping for In between, or venturing off the main routes for.

Thanks for the clarity - make sense. Three weeks sounds like a good estimate - you will not be pushing yourselves too far each day.

Once you start thinking about heading further east we'd be happy to offer thoughts, we made a circuit around Cape Breton this Spring, which was really enjoyable (good news - early enough that there were few people around / less good news - early enough that lots of places were not yet open and the walking trails in the highlands were snowbound). Newfoundland is really great - we did one trip in mid-winter which was really good - no one around other than ourselves!

Sounds like an awesome trip. Hoping to head back to PEI someday (wife and I honeymooned there) I have been slowly planning a trip up the coastline from Maine to PEI and back, going to watch your thread to get ideas. Our trip is a couple of years away also.
