Best/Favorite Weekend Trips (Friday night~Sunday Night) from the Bay Area?

Hello all,

I figure I might as well create a thread to see what trails/camp sites they enjoy going to for a short weekend trip, from friday night to sunday night.

Reason I ask is because I would like to try out some new places, but don't really have much knowledge of where to go.

That said, I'll start by saying:
-Pinnacles National Park, East side. It's quite remote, and not many people go there unless it's a holiday.
-Bishop, there is some off roading, and very remote. Love this place, but quite a bit of a drive especially in the span of 2 days (saturday/sunday)
-Alabama Hills, another nice place, but have gone here twice already. Nothing much to do here. haha

Look at corral hallow trail and slick rock trail. They are close to the bay. Up the 4. I'll be doing a fri-sun trip jul 21-23 on the corral hallow trail.

The Pinnacles are an awesome place to hike! I've been there many times and always had a great time! Great place to explore!
Another one of my favorite places is Yosemite... When I lived in San Jose, we would go four times a year, every season has something special to offer there.

When it comes to off road trails, you have much to choose from, Hollister Hills is great for a day trip and not too far from the Pinnacles, if you want a challenge and your rig is built for it, there is the Slick Rock trail (as mentioned above) if you want a scenic trail, my favorite is Gold Lake/ Sierra Buttes (near Truckee)... http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8620&highlight=Gold+Lake

I always liked heading up towards the Lost Coast area. There's a great mtn bike loop called Paradise Royale west of Garberville that is right on some great backcountry rds accessing the various trails on the Lost Coast.

Prewitt Ridge in Big Sur. You can still get there through the Army base.

Yea, I LOVE the Pinnacles. It was an excellent way to "practice" backpacking and configuring my setup even further since I would leave camp early in the morning and do the long loop which took from sunrise to sunset (I think it was 30 some miles?), and get back to the campgrounds.

Yosemite is nice, but it seems impossible to get a spot there, without reserving in advance.

Hollister is nice, but as you say, it's only like a day trip thing. Not to mention, it get's boring quick.

When you say "your rig is built", what do you mean by this exactly? How built of a rig are we talking?

That trail looks fun!!!! How modified do you need to be to go through that trail?

Sounds interesting. Quite a drive though. Have more information on this spot?

Here's a start, I couldn't get on the BLM site. if you read up on the Lost Coast Trail, they explain trailheads and campgrounds for the area. The week became a hat trick of fun for us- a few days of mtn biking Paradise Loop, then driving the backroads over to the start of the LC trail to hike down, then just the overlanding in the whole area. One time my friend insisted on taking his Mazda Protege', it technically worked, but was comical at best on a steep bullrock run to a trailhead. Here's a blog one of the hiking loops we did, you can see Horsetrail Camp Rd and some campgrounds, but get a good map for the area. http://e-travelust.blogspot.com/2008/12/lost-coast-backpacking-day-2.html

Buck Cr Trail would be a great day hike, it's fairly steep but just 3 miles to the beach IIRC, then you have to climb back up or you can backpack down and sleep on the beach.

Lost Coast in Eureka and Eel River in Fortuna are great little breweries if that's your thing.

How difficult is the wheeling there? I just googled it with not much information available. Recommendation on a route?
Very easy, especially if I saw a Prius up there haha.

I went up through King City and then through Hunter Liggett Army Base it brings you up the backside of the ridge vs from Hwy 1 since it's closed.

Here's the gps coordinates:

Hmm, sounds like a great place since it's not that far from me.

BTW, I just noticed your location is MV. I'm in MV as well. Hope to see you around. :)

Thinking of heading up there this weekend. Couple of questions:

1) can anyone just drive through the Army Base?

2) Is it just dispersed camping up there? Can you make fires with a permit?

Looking at going June 24th to Corral Hollow, how would my 03 2500 Suburban do?

2.5" lift, 33" tires and G80 locker.

Yeah my buddies stock long bed tacoma made it up. Don't need lockers just gets a little tight in spots. That's both ways up the trail.
