Battery’s and multiple battery’s

Hi there, I started this topic to discuss everything car battery’s.
I know my way around a car and truck but fairly new to overlanding deep cycle battery’s.
I think this topic is quite important as there are no pure battery pages that an hour of searching could find.

My current setup consists of two 55amp Optima’s together to crank, one 95amp Odyssey pc1350 and a homemade jump pack with a small Exide 12amp racing battery.
(The Exide was specially sourced for my old defender super truck with a Chevy v8, the battery gives 1500 CCA so it always starts anything up)
The Odyssey is in the national Luna dual battery box’s, to be honest given a day or two and a couple hundred quid I could make something work but given the quality and features that the box gives it was hard to beat, especially with the breaker two individual fused out puts and the dual charger built in. On longer trips or base camping I bring an 80w or 2x 80w photonics universe panels.

Genesis makes a really good quality dual battery setup. Comes with a mounting bracket and an isolator that will jump your starting battery. I’m running this setup in a 79 series we use for training military personnel. It’s been one of my favorite upgrades done on the truck. Look for the universal dual battery kit unless you have a JK or RZR.

I have been using group27 Interstate deep cycle marine/RV battery from Costco. Tough part about deep cycle batteries ia alternators being able to charge them adequately. I will now be periodically using my home charger to be sure it is topped off. I just changed mine out this week as my truck was sitting for a month and battery died. For $100, I would rather swap it out with winter approaching than risk dead battery even though I live in CA. I just can't stomach paying $300+ for some batteries when they don't seem to last longer. I also use a Goal Zero Yeti400 and solar to run the fridge camping. The deep cycle main is a back up for the Yeti.

I second Tricklet03's comments. One of the best mods I've added to my Jeep. I have two odyssey 34-PC1500T in my rig and this setup has saved my bacon a few times. I installed the remote green screen monitor and find that to be pretty handy as well.

Hello, if you have charging issues with the deep cycle batts you can use a charge booster, simply said its a battery charger that uses 12V as source to perfectly charge another battery and it starts working when your engine is running.
It also separates your accessorie batts from your starting battery, so your fridge or camp lights can't drain your starter battery!
Charge booster also allows you to run lifepo4 batteries as accessorie or auxiliary batteries, which saves a lot of weight and gives more capacity, but it's expensive...

I'm going to use one of these in my setup next year, as my rig is a jeep wrangler, weight is a thing for me, thats why a lifepo4 battery plus a charge booster is the way to go for me.

That looks like a great option. I am starting a defender 109 build now that will incorporate a dual battery system.

As you are based in the US, there are some distributors who selling high performance alternators, some of them have adjustable regulators to suit the needs of specific batteries, maybe this is a option to, otherwise an alternator who provides 200A should do the job at least enough to charge your main battery and power a charge booster for the auxiliary bat system.

does anyone use AGM batteries in their rigs?
we use them for our electronic geasr in my job becuase of their size and vibration resistance. I'm looking into them as my power source and wondered if anyone else has any.we have them on a dual battery setup with float charger.

Recently installed an ODYSSEY EXTREME Model 34R-PC1500T GROUP 34 BATTERY in my 2016 4Runner. The summers here in AZ are battery killers. When you add vibration from what we do to the mix, regular batteries don't last long and are unreliable. Running solo a lot, a dependable battery is extremely important to me. The install requires a plastic spacer on the bottom since the Odyssey is slightly shorter than the regular battery.

I have a dual battery system, I use a National Luna Intelligent Split Charge System; BUT I have had problems with the cable connector attaching to the LED read out! Overland Journal, Summer 2017 issue, tested dual battery systems and noted this same problem with the National Luna Dual Battery System. That OJ issue recommended the Intelligent Battery System as Editor's Choice.
I have tried many battery brands over the years and now rely on Odyssey, a group 34 for starting/running and a group 31 for fridge, winch, etc. Odyssey says their batteries are dual purpose; good starting batteries as well as deep cycle, they are tough and long lasting, read up about them. I also use them in my motorcycles, road and off road, so they get banged around in off road motorcycles and in my FJ60 Land Cruiser. You gotta have reliable batteries or you don't make it home!

If you're running multiple auxiliary batteries, how you connect them makes a difference to their life span.
I put this together while researching battery to battery and solar power charging, but made it a bit generalised to explain the issues a bit more clearly.

Would the advantage of using a marine battery only be if you're running something like a fridge? I should only have to charge my phone, tablet, and camera overnight while the vehicle isn't running and I feel like a car AGM battery should be able to do that just fine.

Ive had no issues with only running one yellow top but I am really thinking about a duel batt system for my 2011 JKU. Just trying to find a good medium with price vs quality.

If that's all you need, then the main battery will be enough.
