the article has great points, however...
simply these radios are not type accepted for GMRS, FRS or MURS operations etc
using these radios out of the amateur bands is in complete violation (illegal) and might cause the user to receive fines and/or jail time and/or both
discussion of illegal activities ought to be against forum rules
Yes in a life & death situation you are allowed to use any means available to secure help/rescue, though the radio will be confiscated, you will be jailed and so forth
but you will be alive if you can get your signal to the intended party given these radios low power capabilities
buy the real radio for the task and obey the laws IMHO
I implore everyone to get their amateur license, its really simple to accomplish
then you will have access to repeaters that cover even a great area than simplex would provide

After about three days of not much success finding anything beyond the weather station on nearby Currahee Mt (yeah, the one in Band of Brothers), I was able to get CHIRP to program in some channels and local repeaters and finally picked up some traffic. I guess there's either not much radio traffic here, or I was listing at all the wrong times.

I gotta study up and get this license.
