Years ago I was told amber lights were intended for use in fog and smokey situations. I guess it reduces the glare caused by the light hitting the fog/smoke.

I have a '63 Land Rover. When I first bought it I decided to see what after market options were available for vehicles like it back in the '60s. Several sites showed original ads and catalog pages. All of those advertising amber lights listed them as "Fog Lights".

I am interested in this as well. I get that the more yellow light isnt as harsh for oncoming vehicles but If I am using light bars I am likely leading or solo.

From what I understand it is pretty subjective. Most who use amber lights claim that they are better for fog, dust, snow, and rain because the light produces less glare. When those conditions are not present amber light is perceived as less bright. I use amber fog lights, I prefer them for the above reasons, I am sure many will have different opinions and information.

Google 'amber fog lights'. If you add 'vintage' to that you'll get the history as well.

On a side note...I literally HATE those people who feel the need to drive down the highway, or through town, or on the inner city highways with the big a**, or multiple light bars turned on. Those with the really powerful LED lights that do this need a special spot reserved for them in hell.

What are the rules regarding lightbars and offroad lights where you are?

Where I am you cant have them lit while driving on highways (for obvious reasons) however theres always those idiots that have them on driving through town.
In some nearby provinces (Canada) you must have opaque covers on all lightbars and offroad lights while driving on highways. Likely to prevent the idiots from 'accidentally' turning them on.

The laws are lax around here. I'm not aware of covers being required. In the big city it is illegal, as it is on the highway. In the city you'll be stopped, but on the rural parts of the highway there are stretches where you won't see a cop for 50-70 miles. In the small towns it's also lax.

It's more of a coutisy thing - we have a ton of bubba rednecks that do it because they can. These guys have the mindset of "We have this type of vehicle so we can do as we please". Thankfully not all of them are like this. It worse in the mire rural areas around the bigger towns.

Along the lines of those who don't dim their brights for on coming traffic.
