This is my second Honda-based off-road build featured on the Overland Bound forum. The first was our 2007 Honda Pilot (link here), which has garnered over 111k views to date.

After our Pilot recently surpassed 300K miles, we began searching for another family hauler to complement our fleet. While the Pilot is still running, it's starting to show signs of wear with rough driving and shifting.

I plan to continue repairing and maintaining it alongside this new build.

We are an adventurous family of five who loves to travel, often covering thousands of miles on pavement.

Given that, we're looking for a vehicle that strikes the right balance between comfort, safety, efficiency, storage, and off-road capability.

From my experience, Honda’s i-VTM4 vehicles excel in this balance, especially considering their ample passenger space and storage capacity.

I was initially drawn to the new Honda Pilot Trailsport but was disappointed by the lack of a middle bench option. Upgrading to the Elite trim for the additional trail modes was beyond what we wanted to spend. I also noticed that the wheelbase and clearance angles on the new Pilot were a step back compared to our 2007 Pilot.

That’s when I discovered the 2024 Honda Passport Trailsport, whose dimensions were much closer to our 2007 Pilot. While the Trailsport trim is mostly cosmetic, it does come with all-terrain tires, 20% softer suspension, 18" wheels, and roof rails.

After test driving it, we were thoroughly impressed. The suspension felt great both on and off-road, and it was significantly faster than our old Pilot. Although the platform is similar to the 2019 Passport, which some see as a downside, I believe manufacturers improve with small annual revisions. I’m familiar with the reliable V6 J35 engine, and the platform has already been tested both on road and off-road.

We chose an Sonic Gray Pearl 2024 Honda Passport as our next family hauler, and I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned from our Pilot to create an even better build.

Following! Love the color choice. My wife has been a long time devotee to the Pilot. We currently have a 2021 touring. Was curious to see how capable this platform could be.

It is interesting to compare our 2007 Honda Pilot and our 2024 Honda Passport Trailsport. The Passport definitely has more width. I'm not gonna lie the angled back window is a disadvantage for loading.
The front clearance on the pilot is very good, the Passport wins in the rear.

We have partnered with HRG Offroad to build a new lift for the 2024 Honda Passport! Ben said he should be able to make a beast kit somewhere between 3-4.5"!!!
Soon we will be forced to buy new tires because the stock ones will look silly. I am leaning towards 255-70-18 Goodyear Duratrac RTs. These are in between a mud and all terrain tire.

As mentioned in my previous update, the HRG Beast Lift (approximately 4.5") is going to make the stock tires look TINY! To visualize this, I created a mockup of how it might look.

I’m currently planning to upgrade to 32"-33" tires for the build and have narrowed down the size options to either 255/70R18 or 265/70R18.

For tire models, I’ve narrowed my choices to the following:
  • Toyo Open Country AT3
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T3W or A/T4W
  • Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT
  • Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek
Each of these tires weighs under 50 lbs in either the SL or XL load ranges.

Right from the factory, I noticed that the headlights seemed too high. After getting flashed by other drivers for the fourth time, I decided to do some research.

It turns out many Honda owners have reported similar issues with their headlights being set too high. In this video, we adjust them down a few inches.

In my opinion, they not only look better but also appear brighter now that they're angled slightly lower.

FYI, this youtube comment added the appropriate tool (16 in. long reach #2 phillips screwdriver)

The HRG 4.5" Beast Kit is installed and now our stock tires look tiny! I am pleased to report we drove over 600 trouble free miles this weekend delivering aid to our family in the path of Hurricane Helene! We will continue testing and report our findings, but so far I am loving the lift! Now to make 32" tires fit...

Today, our neighbors stopped me to say how much they love the new Offroad Passport build! We're set to get the new tires installed this weekend. I’ll need to do the same trimming that JonDZ did on his Passport, but since there are some differences between our builds, I’m really hoping everything fits as planned!

Delivering aid to our family in Aiken was a good first test for our HRG Beast kit 4.5" Lift. We hauled 91lbs ice, 132lbs of Gasoline, an 80lb Generator, and a family of 5! Before the lift my hitch carrier would drag exiting our driveway. Now it is held high up and out of the way! Overall the trip was a success. This was a good test for our adjusted headlights as well. No one flashed us.

Last weekend was big! I worked up the courage to install our new 265-70-18 Goodyear Duratrac RT tires. I selected these tires because they were three peak rated, had over 16/32 tread, weren't e-rated, and have an aggressive side wall/tread. Tire options were limited for 18" wheels. but I am really happy with them so far! I also like that in tire world you round up, so our 32.6" tires can be called 33s! LOL

This tires size adds an additional 1.5" of lift to the rig!

Even with a lift it is necessary to trim for tires over 32". Watch the video if you dare see what was done. (Proceed at your own risk)

Nice, I love it.

I recently installed an OEM Honda hitch on our Passport and just finished putting together the vlog for it. I made a small modification to keep the factory silver kick plate, which was important to me since most Hondas don't have much going for them in terms of rear styling. Removing that little detail on the Passport felt like a downgrade.

I also decided to save some money by sticking with a 4-pin harness, which let me get cut off the 6-pin plug bracket. All my trailers use a 4-pin anyway, and I didn't want to bother with an adapter. Plus, the 6-pin bracket hung lower, which could’ve been a problem off-road. The silver kick plate really stands out compared to the black plastic version, and it feels more in line with the look I’m going for on this build.

It's great to hear that you've chosen a vehicle that fits your family's needs for comfort, safety, and off-road capability. The upgrades in suspension and all-terrain tires should make a noticeable difference in both on-road and off-road performance compared to your old Pilot. I can't wait to see how you apply your experiences from the previous build to enhance this one. Keep us posted on your progress and any modifications you make! I’m currently pursuing my degree, and I often struggle with assignments. I discovered UK Assignment Help - Best Experts. Cheap Prices. Online Support. ukwritings through a friend’s recommendation, and I’m so thankful for that! Their assignment help service is incredible. I received quality work that was well-researched and perfectly written. The process was easy, and I got my assignment on time. If you’re facing a similar struggle, I encourage you to give them a try!
Thanks for the another video :)

The lift and tires on our 2024 Honda Passport Trailsport came together perfectly this weekend at Overland South in Charleston, SC.
When I first scouted the obstacle course, I thought they had finally managed to 'Honda-proof' it.

To my surprise, the Passport’s clearance allowed us to take on the entire course with only minor bumps! Our 2007 Honda Pilot also made it through, but with a bit more scraping along the way.

The difference between the two really stood out on the flex ramp. The Pilot could only go so high, but the Passport kept climbing—honestly, I think I could have kept going until it flipped if I wanted!

Our Hondas are built for long-range adventures on mild trails, they excel at loose terrains and the occasional unexpected obstacle. This experience shows just how capable they really are.

AWD Fest 2024 at Uwharrie National Forest provided a great off-road test for our 2024 Passport Trailsport Overland build.

I was impressed with the gearing and power compared to our 3.5"-lifted 2007 Honda Pilot, now at 315k miles. Outfitted with 265/70R18 Goodyear Duratrac RT tires and the HRG Beast Kit's 4.5" lift, the Passport has 11 inches of front skid plate clearance and even more everywhere else. While it isn’t a rock crawler, the increased clearance was noticeable, especially compared to the Honda Pilot. Throughout the entire trip, including some night wheeling to the top of Daniel for stargazing, we only touched the skid plate a handful of times.

I’m thrilled with the balanced capability the Passport offers on and off-road. It handles exceptionally well, providing a comfortable and enjoyable ride as we cruise with the windows down, blasting our favorite tunes. The AWD and torque vectoring make a huge difference, especially in wet conditions, making this the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever driven.

Enjoy the photos, and don’t miss the first day’s video coverage of the event!
