Have you looked at the Milestar Patagonias. That's what I'm getting. Amazon even has them. They are like a hybrid m/t. Now, according to reviews they are a 20 to 30k mile tire on average (depending on use). But for $170 each not bad.
I understand your concern. I have always been weary of leaving my campsite alone. I moved to AZ a year and a half ago from Miami. I have camped numerous times and here in AZ nothing has happened. Lost of people camp in public land here. Not saying it couldn't happen but from my short experience...
Just came back from camping in Mingus mountain and running the Smiley rock trail. had a great time. Lot's of snow, water and mud to make the trail very fun.
