Gear for starting out? (Check my list!)

Is somebody actually using a hitch basket? I thought about it briefly, but it really is suboptimal for the departure angle, so I never considered it again. Personally, if I’m not towing, I don’t carry extra fuel. And if I tow, I carry it in the trailer.

Learning to wrench for field repairs and DIY installs

I believe so. You may, but if you are in accident later and have meddled with your brakes, it could turn out not nice.

Just be careful regarding local jurisdiction if you touch the brakes. There are places in the world where this is not advisable.

Gear for starting out? (Check my list!)

Let's go through the list and maybe add some notes: - First Aid / Trauma kit Makes sense to have, I often heard the comment (not here), to only take what you are trained/knowledgeable to use, but since often enough you find people more qualified, but without their equipment, it might make...

    Skottle First Cook - Issue

That's exactly what I'm doing. I can do everything a skottle does with my setup, plus I can do a lot more. The only thing a skottle could replace for me is a pan. I'd still need a pot, a kettle, and possibly a griddle or so. So, I'm actually adding a much larger package for something that isn't...

    Skottle First Cook - Issue

The thing is: this is just a piece of simple metal, a cheap and shitty burner and a set of 3 dollar legs. The concept is the same as cast iron or carbon steel cooking, it’s just hyped by the “overland boom” and therefore they get away with cheap components at an insane price. A good dual burner...

    Skottle First Cook - Issue

It just shows that a hyped new piece of gear isn’t what it’s hyped up to be. Not surprised here. I was thinking of getting a skottle a while ago, but when thinking about it, I realized it would be bad at nearly everything I cook. Way worse than what I can pack in a similar amount of weight and...

Whose from the Bay Area? Post a pic

Nice car – at least you got it out of California for a trip ... we've been "confined" (due to time constraints) to mostly local trips.

WTB: Patriot X1 or Turtleback Expedition for Jeep JKU.... Change my mind???

Yeah, I was about to order and did some last minute due diligence research and that thread saved me a lot of money. When looking through that and seeing the trailer taken apart and thinking about the details, it becomes clear that it's not only badly engineered (low quality), but also very...

WTB: Patriot X1 or Turtleback Expedition for Jeep JKU.... Change my mind???

Worth a read: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/turtleback-expedition-purchasing-experience-review.75590/ Made me not consider the Turtleback trailer anymore.

What gets adjusted when increasing tire size?

Looking at this kit, these guys either have no clue what they are doing or the website is wrong. Or both. I checked for the 4Runner TRD Pro 2021 with Fox suspension and they claim a front lift of 2” with the rear being 1.25”. This WILL change geometry since the TRD Pro is ALREADY “leveled” - but...

Do you keep a knife or hatchet/axe in your rig?

Hatchet, two different saws, a bushcraft knife and a multitool. Right tool at a the appropriate time is the key. There are many things that can be done with an improvised tool, but why would I do that if I don’t have to? And an edit to the above: I don't try to trim down the number of things I...

    Interesting POV

Overlanding today has little to do with getting out anymore. There are are handful that actually do get out, the rest are just searching for a way to burn vacation budgets on gear that will never be used properly after people find out that there are bugs, rain, and no toilets “out there”.

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

Gobi rack for the 4Runner arrived after exactly 9 months. Not quite sure what to think of that … Also, new Dometic CFX3 55IM - tested the ice maker yesterday, works great. Still on the way here is a Jackery 500. Today I’ll start measuring the back for my drawer system build …

    Need recommendations for propane stove

Multifuel stoves and lantern. Both leaked like crazy from new, the stove had a bad weld on the tank, the lantern leaked in multiple places. I replaced the tank on the stove at first, but the system still kept going out and not working properly. Coleman offered to send me completely new pieces...

    Need recommendations for propane stove

I recently bought two Coleman products, both failed on first use. I will never buy another one. Just saying… the older ones were probably much better.
