  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Just started, got the car, a little money, and a lot of ideas

@12C20 and @scubasteve2002 said it all. Don't leave home ever again without recovery gear (15+' tow strap rated at least twice your vehicle's weight, tree saver strap, D-ring or soft shackles, a shovel, and jumper cables). I cannot stress this enough. The tree saver allows you to make a bigger...

    Bruder EXP-6

Hard not to recommend the Ram, honestly. They've been at the top of the food chain for some time, and that legendary Cummins diesel is a good thing! I'd never be able to go that big, but if you can have your cake and eat it too, you might as well!

    Bruder EXP-6

@leebones 2500 class. If you're a heavy packer, you'll need all the extra durability you can get. Buying a 1500 is more expensive when you consider all the upgrades it will need in order to make it capable of doing all the 2500-class stuff you want to do with it, and then you still break it and...

What is the best piece of advice you can give a new overlander?

@Outlandish_Mits Agreed, except for planning out every detail - that might serve better in some trip styles than others; I find that keeping it loose generally yields better results for my short trips, because some times you'll find great places to do things that weren't on your list. If you're...

Member Introductions *NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCE YOURSELF*

@SeaPig Those Nitto Ridge Grapplers and dual battery are a good start. There are many "best advice" threads, but what it comes down to is learn to drive, use common sense, take what you use, don't take what you don't use, always take recovery gear whether you use it or not, and never leave home...

    Camping Tent Security

I've seen ancient posts pop up in "Recent" on some forums, not necessarily just this one - could be a glitch common to this sort of structure, or some thing.

The Quest for Travel, Freedom, and Adventure

@Murphy Slaw I'm not insane, but all the insane people make every day an adventure for me!

    Trails

Uwharrie, Tellico, Old NC 105, and consider exploring nearby states! Haven't been farther west than Uwharrie (fairly central) but I understand that there are forest service roads all over the place - some times there are ungated offshoots that can take you to very technical and sketchy terrain...

    Camping Tent Security

@Kevin108 Good point, but did you know this thread has sat untouched for one year? I don't think the OP has much interest, since he didn't respond to the question. More information is needed, for certain. Security is largely relative, as what keeps some thing safe in one place can put it at...

What is the best piece of advice you can give a new overlander?

@Kevin108 This. Don't take what you didn't use the first time (but ALWAYS take food, water, and safety/recovery gear!) and you'll save a lot of time, stress, and weight. If you need it and don't have it, then take it next time, OR, decide to do some thing differently so you won't need it next time.

    Any minimalists?

Sure, I'll bite. I keep the builds simple and replaceable, with a few small modified/fabricated accessories (like a front hitch receiver). Off-road is my primary intention, daily duty is optional, and camping is absolute bottom priority. I use all of my trucks for truck duty and need the cargo...

Baja for the next few days!

@Fairbro @MMc Hmm... I can't necessarily agree with all of that logic. Nevertheless, I have had the best luck with it of all the people I have known. Heed warnings. Prepare accordingly. Be smart, and you don't have to be scared, and don't let anybody talk you into tackling an obstacle you're...

    F150 build

A proper set of tires will get you farther than any other modification. Lifting is important for making sure that the tires are the only thing that touches the ground! That's not a fancy setup but that's exactly the best way to keep it. Simple, reliable, all fun and no sweat.

    Something Weird in the Forest

@rgallant Sad state of affairs that we don't trust strangers? Perhaps. Much better to distrust some one you don't know than to risk, or more than risk, the safety of the ones you are responsible to take care of. You can't know the intentions of a disgruntled, erratically-behaving stranger. You...

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

@CalTexMex The thing that makes every project precious is how easily somebody else can take them away from us. One careless or unkind person is all it takes to destroy a lifetime of hard work. I hope the loss was only of the vehicle, and you and company didn't leave with serious injury. Last...

    Grand Staircase & Bears Ears.

@MOAK Not sure about your region, but in my area (not sure if state or county, I'd have to look it up) they're proposing legislation requiring permits in order to use these "public" recreation areas, as in, hiking trails. The proposed fee is $5 per entry... "per car". Which car? What happens if...

    Camping Rake

@jimmyjamson I think that "Unusual Camping Items" would actually serve well as its own thread, don't you? A rake isn't some thing that I would have thought to bring along, but if I was going to use a ground tent, I can appreciate its utility!

    Something Weird in the Forest

I'll also have you remember the detail that the good Samaritan was helping a guy who was in no condition to survive, and was in bad enough shape that he couldn't ask for help. He certainly wasn't throwing rocks at the Samaritan's donkey when he came by to see what was wrong. If the guy had...

    Something Weird in the Forest

@Tommys (Matthew 5:38-48; Luke 10:25-37) Let's break it down. Who exactly is my neighbor? It's important to note firstly that in every instance, the Bible makes a clear distinction between your "neighbors" and your "enemies". Jesus denoted this difference at the end of his "good Samaritan"...

    Something Weird in the Forest

@Tommys On that note, I have found that fine-tuning your backing skills can be extremely useful for those times you need to make a quick exit, and/or find traffic moving in the opposite direction. If I'm ripping through the narrows and find somebody sketchy or a place I don't think I can get...
