Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
I don't disagree, but like every other tool, it's only useful if one knows how to use it.
I don't carry any spare parts currently, other than fuses and Relays. That being said, I plan on building up a kit with the following spares:
Tie rods
Serpentine belts
Upper/lower radiator hoses
Fuel...
You'll need to make sure the air intakes and exhaust can breathe. That's not a terrible idea though. I've already sort of standardized on the plano totes. Putting it in one of the 56 qt totes would honestly work fairly well.
I was able to fire up mine over the weekend to make sure everything works as it should prior to my weekend trip in two weeks. I have a suspicion that this thing will have ZERO problems keeping my tent warm on even the coldest of nights.
Now to figure out a way to keep water out of it for the...
This is VERY true. I carry some tools and equipment that most people don't, like a multimeter and all sorts of stuff to fix and patch electrical gear. I haven't had to use most of it yet, but I did have an issue on my last trip with the circuit breaker used to control the charging current to the...
With how dangerous HiLifts can be, nobody should be using one unless they know what they are doing, in my opinion. I don't carry one, and probably never will. For lifting my vehicle, I carry a simple bottle jack. It's MUCH safer.
The same task could be accomplished with a good come along...
I don't have one on either vehicle. I've only gotten stuck once in my Xterra, and I could have easily backed out of that spot. It was on a snow bank. I try not to put myself in a situation where I would need it in the first place, but we'll see after I start doing solo trips. I may change my...
First of all, welcome! Also.... Excellent choice in vehicles.
I will tell you, your frontier should require zero modification to get out there. I've wheeled my stock '13 Pro4x on some pretty gnarly trails. Just choose your line carefully.
As far as "overland" gear goes, none of it is really...
Upgraded the radiator in my Xterra from the oe Nissan radiator to a supercharged Koyo radiator for better cooling. Also added an auxiliary transmission cooler.
While process took about 3 hours, and that was without really knowing what we were doing.
Also refilled my wiper fluid.
I plan on having a sensor mounted in the slew of work I'll be having my mechanic do. I went through the same issue with my 04 Colorado. I was able to monitor the temp via torque and an obd2 reader. Took upgrading the cooler twice to get it down around 170 on flat ground.
This is something most people don't think about.
When I bought my Xterra, it was in pristine condition (minus a sagging headliner, which I still haven't got around to fixing), and had 26 pages of service records dating back to 2003.
I was able to confirm that the timing belt was done, and at...
It's an interesting question.
My overland build is a 2003 Nissan Xterra. I chose this vehicle for ALOT of reasons, but the primary ones are:
Cost
Reliability
Durability
Simplicity
Is this the answer for everyone? No. Is it better because it's old, super reliable, and tough? Of course not...
I will consider that for sure.
Will definitely be firing it up this weekend and seeing how it works. I was hoping to do it this week, but family obligations have kept me busy all week.
I'm planning on using it over the weekend of 11/11 for two nights to heat the tent. I still need to get a...
I'm either sleeping inside my Xterra on the sleeping platform, or in my RTT on the trailer. I may try and use this with the Xterra, and fab up a spacer that I can place on the window, but in either case, the heater will be outside, with the air being pumped into my sleeping space.
I got a vevor 8kw all in one unit. Haven't had a chance to fire it up yet. Had to work until 5,then had to go and pick up kitties from the vet, then make dinner, etc, etc. I won't get a chance to fire it up until after my kid goes to bed tonight, at the earliest.
I'm going to be using it in a few weeks. The goal is to be able to go out solo during the winter, without the need for a sub zero rated sleeping bag (though I'll have one on hand just in case).
Just so you're aware, I have one of these being delivered today, but purchased via fleabay. There substantially cheaper over there. Once it gets here, I plan on firing it up.
