    Trailer or No Trailer?

I've spent the last 6 years refining our trailer. Knowing what I know now, I could build one up in a few days. It follows us wherever we go. It's in the barn right now, packed and ready to roll, and it's light, therefore we still get 13 to 14 mpg . It hauls our cold food, has running tap water...

OB Approved Becoming a Skilled Spotter

Unbelievable... That poor gal obviously had very little if any experience. Once a spotter starts yelling, or giving imperceivable hand signals it's time to "get out and look" then find a polite way to tell them to go away.. Over the decades I've done just that on more than a few occasions.

    new basecamp equipment..

They are very few and far between, but they do exist. Unbelievable as it may seem, Maine has one of the largest and most remote back country areas in the lower forty eight. There are also a couple of areas for remote camping in the Appalachians. and some of the barrier islands. Once you wander...

    Sleeping Bags

Many many years ago we bought a pair of inexpensive bags from LL Bean. They served us very well, and still do, but as they are both rated at 35+ degrees. I thought it high time to invest in a pair of really really good bags as we were planning this southwest tour in March and early April.. After...

Thoughts on this article-the 10 commandments of modifying an overland vehicle

Hmmm,, I read those 10 commandments years ago and I still read most all of the articles. Practical advise for North American over landers? Not always, but it's not much different than JP, Toyota, or 4wd magazines targeting the gear head demographic. All those highly modded rigs featured in those...

    Synthetic Line Winch Question

Absolutely true... My son worked on a crabbing vessel ( Arctic Lady) in the Bering Sea for 4 years.. Line of choice was Amsteel Blue, which is a Dyneema line.. Impervious to UV, salt, etc etc. don't ever cheap out on winch line. Stick with quality, pay the price.. Amsteel Blue or Viking are...

When Should You Replace Overland Rig Tires?

I've run nothing but BFG for over 25 years. and 3 vehicles. After hundreds of thousands of miles and plenty of 2 track, I experienced only a single failure, a too long valve stem was pinched by a rock and ripped out, which was not a tire failure. I abide by a few rules,, 34-36psi on the road...

    Fiskars Axe

that's good to know, but i did go out and get a big ass wooden axe for splitting,, the new fiskars is mounted in the cruiser.... It's a shame that chrysler didn't do the same or I'd be driving a JKU Rubicon today... but that's another story, unless "gear review" can be about vehicles as gear...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Yesterday I got up. Early, 4:30 or so,, Made a pot of coffee, then went out to the barn and got a fire going.. went back in the house until the barn warmed up a bit, then spent the rest of the day removing my home made drawer system in order to beef the drawers up a bit. They used to rattle a...

    Fiskars Axe

UPDATE :::::: :::::: I'm very impressed,,, When I filed the claim I stated that the axe was purchased some 10+ years ago, and because of my job had just recently started using it regularly.. Hey,, guess what? Fiskars sent me a brand new X11 17" axe/hatchet, no charge, no questions asked...
