I think being weight conscious is the important thing. You have a plan to reduce when and where possible on mods, and that's great. As far as the camping stuff goes, all you can do is look at everything with a critical eye and if you haven't used it in two or three trips.....do you really need...

Well, I live about an hour to 1.5 hrs away, so, I may need to join you, LOL! I have NOT driven that section......I just Google Earth flyovered that area/route. Knowing the zone and terrain around there, I'd guesstimate that you'll be fine.....unless it rains. We have some nasty bentonite clay...

If they are primarily going to use it loaded, the 8.1 isn't going to care. It' likely going to get the same mileage loaded or empty and be way better at dealing with the passengers and load than a 1/2 ton or the Venza. While I haven't specifically had one with an 8.1, I'd love to have...

Hit up the little town of Creede and visit the Fire Station there.......It's entirely inside the mountain in old mining tunnels and is pretty close to to Lake City. The drive from Creede to Lake City is pretty as well.
