    Fj80/Fzj80 instrument cluster question

Are you familiar with IH8MUD Forum ? All your Landcruiser questions will be answered there.. I’m not sure what you mean by “ cable driven” unless you’re asking about throttle cables. The FZJ 80 does have a throttle cable.

    Buying a Vehicle for Overlanding

Don’t get me wrong, here in North America I drive a gasoline powered vehicle. However, if I was planning on traveling the world, the gasser would go by the wayside and I’d be looking for a diesel powered truck . The smell? Modern Diesel engines do not stink of diesel. I drove 18 for 25 years...

    Who's more annoying?

I don’t get driving any faster than 20 in our PA forest roads... I hope they nail the speeders

    Rim Rocker Trail

I was one of the original trail guys for Todd (@ Trailsoffroad).. Once into it I found I really didn’t care for point to point detailed directions. IMO it’s a lot more fun, interesting , adventurous and gratifying to occasionally become misplaced when out and about. I have downloaded the...

    Rim Rocker Trail

Interesting, after studying google earth, I see that there are indeed a lot of crossroads that lead to pavement. It’ll be a good trip.

(Need assistance) Connecticut to Washington (and back)

We go west every year. Close our eyes and hammer on the interstates until we get west of the Mississippi. Once past the river, get off the interstates and connect the dots between state & national forests using regular two lane country roads. Keep track of your time, but other than that...

    Rim Rocker Trail

Has anyone on here been on the Rim Rocker Trail? I’ve found quite a bit of info on the web site. Our primary concern would be snowfall averages during the first week of Oct. thanks for any info.

The Beginning is the End is the Beginning (The continuing journey of the “Adventure Machine”)

I’m enjoying your write up immensely. I had an 89 250- best and last pickup I ever owned. If I was ever going to get another full size it would be a Ford from the late 80s. Are you keeping the twin beam front axle or swapping in a solid?

    Low budget...ideas for mods?

Whoa- that’s a nice compliment and I find myself humbled with your words. But yea, a bullet point presentation accompanied by a short video, then nearly an hour long meeting. Soo, now we use , a lot of second hand stuff including camera gear, pelican cases, etc. I’m always looking for the...

    Low budget...ideas for mods?

Good luck on any sponsorships. I attempted that once, with the company I worked for, to no avail. I spent a lot of time putting together a bullet point presentation. They thanked me for my time. They got back to me about a week later with a very kind email stating that it was an interesting...

    Medical extraction insurance recommendations

Agree with the self extraction point of view for minor stuff, broken limbs, cuts, etc. . I’d never dream of launching my PLB signal, or attempting a HAM SOS unless it was completely life threatening.

DIY builds and maintenance. Who works on their own rigs?

It’s only been since I retired that I will allow my very trusted mechanic to do heavy major repairs. I have done and will do everything else as long as I can remove it and replace it. Before 2015, I did all of my own work, except machine shop, differential work, or body repair and paint..

And this is why I love overlanding.

We all, or most all of us started with what we had. I started with a 65/66 VW Bug. I had no money, no gear, no nothing. Just a water jug, some hand tools, a cheap sleeping bag and the desire to explore the high deserts of the southwest. As time passed I modified the bug, added a roof rack, a...

    Equipment insurance?

If it’s loose gear, cameras, backpacks, etc, etc, homeowners insures it like any other theft or loss from your vehicle. If it’s aftermarket bolt on, or our trailer and it all burns to the ground, the only thing covered is the stock value of the truck. All the bolt on and hitched on junk...

    Medical extraction insurance recommendations

I’m in need of Medical Evac Insurance. I see quite a few insurance companies on line but none seem to specifically state that the insurance would cover a wilderness extraction. Recommendations? Thanks in advance

Running trails solo as an overlander

Agree 100%. I lead a tour in the summer and have let the organizers know that I’ll lead no more than 5 vehicles. Besides that my wife and I are solo. The only others I’ll even consider running with are family with capable skill sets and capable vehicles. Except if we were to venture up deep...

    Who's more annoying?

I’m not sure what the OP means by “ owning the road”. I’ve always driven as if I own the road, or at least the real estate I occupy while on the road. It is, the very safest way to drive and my record would indicate that. 3.2 million miles, one moving violation, zero accidents. Not bragging...
