    Experience with Receiver Mounted Winches?

Personally I don't see the point of a 10K receiver mount winch. It's like setting someone up for failure. A 6K would be much more logical. Do you have a clas III, IV, or V receiver? Know the limitations. Understand that anything but a straight pull risks damage and MUCH more important...

Why a RTT (roof top tent)?

The ladder is really only a part of the support system. The two base sections have a tongue and groove that connect as well as the tent section it's self. There is webbing that go over the top of the frame poles that in addition help the whole thing deploy correctly also offer support. On...

    Rockers/Sliders

For a unibody Jeep sure I'd go that way. For a body on frame vehicle no.

    All-Time Favorite Camping Gear

My Engel fridge is by far the best camping item. Ice sucks around camp unless in your evening cocktail. Next inline are my WWII surplus wool pants. Warm in the evening. Huge cargo pockets. And cost me like $13 almost 20 years ago and still going strong. Finally my GSI Outdoors mini espresso...

    Firewood

Portable propane fire "pits" are also an option. The ambiance sucks but in places like Canyonlands where real fires are not allowed they do offer something to drink beer around. If I burn wood I try to find hardwoods worth hauling or buying. Crappy Pine & Aspen take too much space.

Why a RTT (roof top tent)?

Everything has its compromises. Packing up a RTT takes about 15 minutes without the annex attached. It kind of sucks but really not that bad. For real wheeling trips I still prefer its comfort and storm worthiness over a ground tent. If I know I'm going to have a base camp somewhere like Moab...

Steel Cable vs Synthetic Rope Winch

Powering the line out with a planetary winch is poor practice regardless of line choice. You are forcing the winch to overcome its internal brake. Thus the heat build up. Synthetic line them compounds the problem by offering the drum a thick blanket of insulation rather than a heat sink like...

Steel Cable vs Synthetic Rope Winch

Synthetic has more advantages over steel. But yes it sure sucks when it gets frozen into a solid block on occasion. Steel can do the same but not nearly as bad. I can't see a reason I'd go back to steel.

What do you do when trapped in snow

With proper technique driving over multiple feet is not that hard. Most everything I carry in my truck is to unstuck others. Although on this day I did bury myself to my frame rails and then stall my Warn 12000 with a snatch block trying to continue forward. I'd say the most important thing...

    OB Approved Chain Saws

Not having enough saw is more dangerous than too much most of the time.

    Campsite Power Options..Portabe wind Generators

I can't imagine that small unit in the OP can do much more than charge a cell phone over the coarse of a day. Let alone power a fridge or any other large piece of overland equipment. Personally I think it's more cost efficient to add a dual battery system. That should handle 90% of anyone's...

Pulling the trigger on a RTT, any advice?

Not trying to talk you out of a CVT. But if you have any questions about a Tepui let me know. I'm a dealer and use the Autana Ruggedized model personally. Ruggedized and Summit versions are similar. Basically if you just can't stand green there are other similar options from Tepui.

    Dog Barriers?

Just for the record my stuff does not require any drilling. They all mount using existing captured nuts.

Why a RTT (roof top tent)?

Love my RTT. Nothing better than getting up out of the blowing sand.

SPOT vs APRS? Why Not Both.

Rodger that. I have a Delorme InReach. Similar app for that one too?

SPOT vs APRS? Why Not Both.

OK, I'm a nob with APRS but I have been meaning to upgrade my radio to include it. Why would you need a spot to track you? Doesn't the APRS do that every time you key the mic? Or is it simply to avoid having to?

    Food & Water

Dry ice works well too as it off gases rather than converts to water. But I'm still sticking with the fridge ;)

    CB or HAM?

Little late to the discussion but as very few have discussed the sat options I'll throw in my $.02 I have a CB/HAM 2M,70CM/Delorem Inreach. In a perfect world I'd ditch the CB. But it's there to talk with those who don't have a HAM. For communication within a group, the HAM is a far superior...
